I, like many Americans am of German descent. I always like to be proud of my heritage, but whenever you ask a lot of people who the first famous German person that springs to mind is all they come up with is Hitler (who was actually Austrian by the way).
So what are some positive German figures, role models, etc.?
Here are some that I have been a fan of or read a lot about and liked:
Albert Einstein-Generally regarded as one of the most brilliant minds ever.
Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm-The original authors of many famous children's fairy tales.
Lukas Heller-A German screenwriter who wrote a lot of classic Hollywood movies. My favorite film he wrote is Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
Max Schreck-The Vampire from Nosferatu. Really who hasn't seen at least a clip of him in this classic role?
Werner Herzog-An independent film director.
ALEX WRIGHT-Enough said.

Heck, even if the focus on the WWII era is kept, there's people like Hans and Sophie Scholl, who founded the White Rose movement. True heroes, in my book.

Hey, if I didn't mention Roland Emmerich than what chance does Uwe Boll have. Although I do like at least Independence Day from Emmerich. Actually the Patriot wasn't that bad when I first watched it either, but now it will forever be associated with Mel Gibson-post going insane.

Somehow taking their beer and making everyone in the world think it's "American beer".
Also technically putting men on the Moon since everyone and their brother in NASA at the time were German.

I admire their passion for soccer. Stadiums are all sold out or close to it.

Their culinary contributions are awesome all the different sausages, schnitzel, spetzel, sauerkraut, and the amazing array of beer brewing styles.

Oktoberfest is something to be proud of.
Hopefully, some day, I'll have enough money to spend it all away in a drunken night..
