Mother gets 5 years probation for spanking child

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (CBS) -- A judge in Corpus Christi, Texas some harsh words for a mother charged with spanking her own child, before sentencing her to probation.

"You don't spank children today," said Judge Jose Longoria. "In the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel. You don't spank children."


Rosalina Gonzales had pleaded guilty to a felony charge of injury to a child for what prosecutors had described as a "pretty simple, straightforward spanking case." They noted she didn't use a belt or leave any bruises, just some red marks.

As part of the plea deal, Gonzales will serve five years probation, during which tiume she;ll have to take parenting classes, follow CPS guidelines, and make a $50 payment to the Children's Advocacy Center.

She was arrested back in December after the child's paternal grandmother noticed red marks on the child's rear end. The grandmother took the girl, who was two years-old at the time, to the hospital to be checked out.

Gonzales doesn't have custody of the child or her other two children. She is trying to get them back, but until CPS feels she is ready the kids are living with their paternal grandmother.

That is just stupid. If I misbehaved as I child, I got smacked. It wasn't that hard a smack but it was hard enough to stop me doing whatever I did again.
Smacking a misbehaving child is not abuse and anyone who doesn't know the difference between smacking and abusing a child shouldn't be having kids anyway.

This. If I stepped out of line, my mum tanned my hide. Never used a belt or anything, just 3 solid open hand slaps on the ass.

And honestly, I'm glad I was raised that way. Made me realize there were consequences for my actions.

I'm not for or against this. I think spanking is worthless and that there are better and more constructive ways to raise your children than striking them, but I don't think that this should have gone to court. This should be an isolated incident and should serve as an example and nothing more.

See, THIS is why kids are such bigger assholes today honestly. They start to learn that they can get their parents in trouble for spanking them, and start to act up, unchecked. It's like when you see those kids on talk shows doing the boot camp thing.. you know if mom would have just popped em one for mouthing off,m they wouldn't turn into little monsters.

Was thinking just this.. And those kids grow up with the same mentality as adults.

We've got more and more laxed in the way we punish children, and society continues to get worse and worse. Noone will convince me that the two are not related.

If the only way you can teach a child a lesson is through some form of physical violence, f*** you, you should not be having kids.

And I wasn't. Yet oddly enough I have yet to be charged with a crime, done hard drugs, or released a sex tape. Maybe there is more to good parenting than just hitting or not hitting.
