Show some love for the good old days of NP.
Today, I bought about 22 of the classic issues between 91-95, and I gotta say, they're easily some of the better magazines I've ever read, especially in comparison to how the mag has become, which is streamlined and boring.
The old books had so much. Previews, strategy guides, great game art, posters and s***. It's a shame video game mags are nothing like this anymore.

Nintendo Power was a quality mag. But I was always partial to GamePro back in the day.

I used to have a subscription so many years ago. I used to love reading those, even the stuff for games I didn't own. I think I still have some issues stashed away somewhere, but I don't remember where I put them.

We never got Nintendo Power here, but who remembers the glory days of NOM and N64 magazine vyying for supremacy like WWF and WCW were at the time? (even though both were great mags)

These comics were awesome. That's all I have to say.

For as much as I love the site and use it constantly, I hate that GameFAQs (I know there's more, but that's definitely the most known) has killed the strategy guides in the magazines. And strategy guides in general, now that I think about it.
Nowadays game magazines are just previews, previews, previews and reviews that more often than not come off as biased.
Probably the reason I don't read them anymore.

I hated that magazine back in the day. I was always an EGM reader, myself... until I got the internet.

We never got Nintendo Power here, but who remembers the glory days of NOM and N64 magazine vyying for supremacy like WWF and WCW were at the time? (even though both were great mags) I was always with N64 magazine. It had good reviews and a lot of import news which, without the net at the time, was a big draw for me. I got NOM/ONM too, but eventually it became too cloying with praise. When you're trying to beef up Hexen of all games, the party's over. Then they shifted the entire staff to work on Shoot! magazine!

My favorite videogame mag as a kid was VideoGames. Its spin-off Tips & Tricks was around longer, but I preferred VG. I hated that magazine back in the day. I was always an EGM reader, myself... until I got the internet. Hear, hear. I was an EGM man as well. I still read both EGM and Nintendo Power. Neither are as good as in their heyday, but they're better than most other gaming mags.

How about the freebies subscribers got? I remember the "making-of" video for Donkey Kong Country; I was amazed that Rare could pump graphics like that out of the SNES.
One of the earliest issues I can remember reading had Hulk Hogan on the cover. He was legdropping Earthquake while holding an SNES controller. My most vivid memories of NP are from the N64 era: the strategy guide for Blast Corps and Star Fox, the articles describing the system as "The Fun Machine," and the 100th issue with Mario on the cover and a countdown of the 100 best Nintendo games.
I stopped reading around the time the GameCube came out, but I did pick up their 20-year retrospective issue and the issue commemorating 25 years of the NES.

I used to love poring over the ridiculously detailed maps. Even if i didnt own the game they were still fun to look at.

I will say, the old books sure give useful tips. Even things I didn't know of, like the lives trick on Yoshi's Island. One of the earliest issues I can remember reading had Hulk Hogan on the cover. He was legdropping Earthquake while holding an SNES controller. Funny you should mention that one. It's one of the books I got today.

Get The Power: Nintendo Power!
I used to have some random NP issues as part of something given to me from school. I miss 'em already.

I still have an old beat up issue that talked about Super Mario 2 and had a walkthrough for Legend of Zelda's second question boxed up somewhere around my house.

My favorite gaming magazine ever. Had a subscription from late '95 to probably '99, and I loved pretty much every issue. Always took them to school and read them.
