I was on E today and decided to see how long I could last before my nerves got to me, was not a fun experience, I stopped right as I saw the next Hess.

Is this...is this about drugs? Gas mileage. And anything other than "before 3/4 empty" is the wrong answer.

I seriously thought this was a drug thread at first XD
I'm... Really bad about getting gas for my car. Even the gas light doesn't cramp my style, but then again I live in a really small town and rarely leave it, so I hardly drive more than a mile at a time anyway.
Oddly, I've only ever had my car get 100% empty once in my life, and that was a few months after I got my license. Hasn't ever happened since, even though I'm awful about getting gas.

So it's not drugs...
Once did 60 miles.
Another time I did 50, but it was in the middle of the nevada desert with 3 other guys.

I was heading back from Orlando after evacuating for Hurricane Charley and went the wrong way on I-4 and headed back the wrong way. I ended up coming back down I-75 down the part of the state that got nailed by the storm, most of the gas stations were down and I was running low on gas. I literally drove over an hour on empty before I hit the turnpike and a gas station. God bless that Camry.

Currently, my fuel sensor is out of commission, so I keep an eye on the odometer and fuel up when I know I'm getting low.
All depends on how much weight I've got loaded up and the wind here on the plains (which can make Chicago look silly), but I can generally nurse 60-90 miles out of it.

I have figured out that I can go about 50 miles once the light comes on, so I ride that thing until it's on fumes.

My car goes to E, then there's space after that. About that time I get gas.

A lot of the time I won't fill it up until the low gas light comes on.

I have two gas lights that come on; a yellow one with a shrill beep and then a red one with two rrreally shrill beeps. When the red one comes on, there better be a gas station within a few short miles otherwise I'm in trouble.

My car warns me when I'm down to 50 miles before empty, so I usually fill up around that mark.
I know it's very bad to drive a car on an empty tank, but I get lazy sometimes. Oh, and I hate $80 charges on my credit card to fill up my tank.

I've never tested how far my truck can go when it's at E. If that answers your question.

I look at the odometer and take it from there. After a while you will get to know how much mileage you get out your car and how much gas you can fill it up with.

An old high school teacher used to tell me that "the car runs just as good with a full tank as it does on a low tank."
Keep in mind, this was when I was driving my '77 Nova with a 350 small block and 192 heads with a four barrel carburetor on it. She drank gas like it was her job, and I was lucky to average 11 miles to the gallon on a high school budget.
However, he being a math teacher, got really irritated when I pointed out that the horsepower and torque remain roughly the same, but the weight would be significantly less if the tank was nearly empty, meaning I'd get have improved fuel economy and a better power-to-weight ratio (these are things you think about when your dad used to build hillclimbing race cars).
He didn't bother me about my car after that. Heh.
