Because theyre f***ing idiots. Coming from England, where football hooliganism is the national pastime, it annoys me to the point of migraine. National past time? Really? Do you live in 1975? Its a joke based on stereotypes, calm down. Ive seen plenty of it in the past ten years, but its clearly nowhere near its worst period.

I don't understand the psychology of it. We see the rioting both in the "winning" city as well as (often-times anyway) the "losing" city.
I guess for the losing city, like Vancouver in this case, it's "I am so upset that some highly paid people did not win the game while representing my city, I will break things in frustration". Mass-tantrum taken about 200 notches too far.
But when the fans of the winning team riot...it makes no sense. Yay, we won, I'm so happy, I think what I need to do is get drunk and burn my own stuff to show how overjoyed I am.

I think it depends on the team/sport and location.
The Bulls win 6 championships in the '90s and they try and burn the town to the ground. The White Sox win a World Series, the Blackhawks win a Stanley Cup: nice get together with other fans to celebrate. Maybe an occasional arrest, but that's mainly due to public intoxication.
To wit: basketball fans are the biggest idiots in Chicago.

Emotions boil over, I suppose.
Sport can be a tribal territorial thing.
It's part of the appeal, but obviously has a downside too.

Wait, there was rioting in Boston, too?
Why do people have to celebrate by getting involved in mindless destruction and drunken hooliganry?
It's worse in the case of Vancouver because they lost and it looks like the town is a bunch of sore loses for the uninitiated.
Did they not learn from 1994?

A friend of mine living in the area was super pissed on Facebook. She has kids that hopefully weren't terrified at a bunch of idiots using sport as an excuse to do what they wanted to anyway.

People take their sport WAY too seriously sometimes. Sadly this is too true. I love hockey to death and am completely addicted to it but I'd never go this far. It's just stupid. All it does is ruin your own town's rep and your team's. It's embarrassing.

Besides, Canadians and Bostonians should be smarter than this! They're just giving the rest of themselves (normal, good people) bad names.

I don't understand extreme fandom and rioting. You don't see Ryan Kesler, The Sedins, Luongo, or any other Canuck players rioting. You're just a spectator who may or may not be a fan. That is all a spectator. You do not make a difference if your team sucks or if your team is awesome. So don't get upset if you lost because they lost not you.

And this was the LOSING team. I hate to put up a stereotype, but I am honestly surprised to see Canadians behaving this way. 4-0 stinks, but does not warrant this response. On the other hand, thank goodness the USA DID lose the gold medal, otherwise Canada might have burned like Atlanta. These people do not represent Canada. Don't judge the majority based on the minority. Believe me, I don't, just surprised that the minority would act this way based on the actions and consistent behaviour of the majority. EDIT: 150 people injured last night, two seriously. www.ctvbc.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20110616/bc_vancouver_riots_110616/20110616/

For me, the farthest I'd go in terms of being angry about my teams losing a championship is crying and maybe a few revenge games on a console or something, but never rioting and shit.
