I myself have never said people shouldn't be offended, just offended that he made a crappy joke. I've told god knows how many black, gay, Mexican, etc jokes over my life... doesn't mean I'm a bigot, just means you can get good humor if everyone knows it's done in jest. Granted I tell the black jokes to black friends, etc, and expect them to fire back with a white joke. If I want to be irritated by the nature of the joke, I will. Not asking for permission. You have every right not to care, I truly don't think any less of you for it.

Comedians do and say crazy stuff here and there trying to push the envelope. He apologized, and it sounded sincere to me.

That's just it: It would be a joke. It wouldn't be funny. It would offend. But it would be said in jest. I wouldn't leave the club wanting to call the police to say that this guy's behaviour needs to monitored. I would think "Well, that sucked" and move on with my day. I respect your opinion, but I wouldn't take a comment like that as a joke. If Tracy Morgan said what he did on the street it'd be homophobia, but on a stage it's a joke, that's what I'm not understanding. Because the only reason he's on the stage is to tell jokes. People paid to see him tell jokes, so what was said on stage IMO, no matter how nasty they are, should be taken as jokes. I can't blame anyone for being offended by them. But as others have said we don't know the exact context of how these jokes were delivered, so it's hard to really make any judgment on Tracy without really hearing the context. Best case scenario this sounded like a really cringe inducing evening, but to hear it, would be easier to clarify if this was hate speech or just bad comedy. If this were off stage and he was spouting this awful material it would be easier to construe as homophobia because, joking or not, no one's asking him to say this stuff, he's just saying it. On stage, that's what he's paid to do, tell his interpretation of jokes, which in this case doesn't sound very funny, but he's doing his best. I never found Tracy to be all that funny so I'm don't have a lot of personal reasons to defend him. I don't think he's a homophobe, he seems too widely respected among other comedians and performers to be that nasty of a guy. This is a good cautionary tale for people in the future who might buy a ticket to a Tracy Morgan show expecting to see his 30 Rock character. People are right to condemn him for being reckless with his material, the fact that it can be construed as hate speech is a sign that Morgan's not that strong of a stand up performer. But these requests for him to meet families who have lost relatives to homophobic violence and stuff like that is too much.

It's like Cena vs GLAAD all over again.
A guy makes an unfunny joke on a sensitive subject and the shit hits the fan.

I hate when stuff like this happens but I always participate in the discussion because I can see how the other side feel, they can see my side, and hopefully both sides take away something from it.

With Cena it was pretty benign stuff in comparison to Tracy Morgan going for the shock value. Shock humour does work. Its just that this joke in particular seems excessive and unfunny.

I don't have the patience to get in on the debate due to my throbbing headache, but I will say that, joke or not, what Tracy Morgan said was unfunny and inexcusable. No apology will ever suffice.
I'd boycott his works, but I've never liked anything he's ever done. Truth.

I don't deny that he doesn't have a right to free speech, but it can come with consequences. If I was an NBC executive, I wouldn't want the company associated with homophobic rants, which this appeared to be. If his career is ruined, then it's his own fault for speaking without due consideration first. He's still protected. If he's fired to ''Protect Gay Rights'' or whatever than that's violating his rights. It isn't, because the initial right to free speech isn't being infringed upon.

Yeah, it wouldn't be firing him to "protect gay rights", it'd be because standing behind him if this blows up could hurt ratings and cost NBC ad revenue. Overall, it's probably not worth it.

I'm a fan of Tracy's standup and although this comments were pretty harsh, I'm not going to boycott/be against him. To me, it seems like something Tracy would say in his standup since his stuff is pretty vulgar to begin with. For all I know, I might have laughed my ass off at it if I was there. I hope he doesn't lose his job over this nonsense.

You know, rather than outright fired, I'd rather 30 Rock do an episode focusing on this and making Tracey look a total tit.
