I thought this was a terrible sequel and it was a shame too because I really liked the first one. This film didn't feel like an Iron Man movie at all with the constant screen time for the pointless shield characters. I know they have a big film coming out, but they literally don't do anything. At least in Thor, which I liked btw, it felt like it was his movie with shield characters in it.
I also thought Sam Rockwell's character villian character is one of the worst villians in quite some time. Just silly, annoying, and just ridiculous how he gets more screen time than the ACTUAL main villian of the film, Whiplash.
I don't know if you have heard of Confused Matthew, but his reviews are really good and his rant on Iron Man 2 was spot on.

I had a blast in the theater though, like the first movie, the final showdown was underwhelming.

It was alright, but I agree in retrospect Rockwell was the wrong person to play Justin Hammer. They were kind of going for a superheroed corporate Steve Jobs vs Bill Gates young hip kind of rivalry. Where it would have played much better if Hammer had been portrayed more to his true origins of an aging industrialist being outmanouvered by Tony Stark, thus resorting to industial espionage via Whiplash.
So should have cast someone like Charles Dance.

Wow, they REALLY hated Justin Hammer. I thought he would have stolen the show if Mickey Rourke wasn't so damn awesome.
EDIT: They have good points though about Whiplash's motivation and Stark's responsibility for his father's death.
More comments to come if I have any.

Yeah, it pales to the original. I liked it but it does. The biggest problem is Iron Man doesn't do anything heroic. In the first movie, he builds the suit to escape the terrorists and free him and his friend. He sees his weapons being used by terrorist and flies out and stops them. It also leads to an entertaining scene with the jet fighters. At the end, Stane betrayed him, stole his arc so he has to stop him and his giant Iron Suit.
The first two big Iron Man action scenes, Whiplash finds him racing and attacks him and he fights Rhodes because he's joking around with the armor drunk. He fights Whiplash and his Million Iron Man Army in a loud, kinda boring set. The other times he's in it, he's just having a good time. He doesn't have to go out and fight terrorists again but he could save someone. Like constructions workers at the top of a skyscraper need saving. Or even have him fight one of the malfunctioning robots being built around the world in the Senate hearing.
With Hammer, it's like Peter Parker and Eddie Brock looking alike in Spider-Man 3. Trying to do a mirror image of the other. Has that worked in other comic movies or shows?

Iron Man 2 was as good as the first, and Hammer was awesome.

Black Widow uses a mean Shining Wizard. I liked that. It was alright, but I agree in retrospect Rockwell was the wrong person to play Justin Hammer. I'm gonna disagree there, as w/ the tone of the film.... Whiplash ISN'T the main villain. Justin Hammer is. Whiplash is just a tool he uses.

Exactly. Hammer is the main antagonist. It's mainly his story we follow and his story that propels forward most of the plot. Whiplash is much more just his hired gun - he's the one with nominal super powers, but he's not the main villain.
I enjoyed the sequel. It had better action sequences I felt, and I preferred the War Machine stuff here. Sure, it could have been better, but it was still a decent film and certainly much better than alot of other films.

It's not a horrible movie but I was definitely disappointed. The first movie was great and really got over the Tony Stark character well. But then they just kinda dropped the ball with everything else in the sequel. They made Pepper Potts more annoying (the first movie was about the only movie I didn't find Gwenyth Paltrow grating in it), they didn't give the villains enough screen time. Hell, the biggest and best fight in the movie was between Iron Man and his best friend, who was also in another Iron Man suit. That's not fair, especially since Whiplash went out like such a bitch. I did like Justin Hammer but I'm pretty biased as I'll watch Sam Rockwell in just about anything. Hell, he made the first Charlie's Angels movie watchable.

I don't think it's a movie that's gonna age well for me. I really don't think it'll stand up to repeated viewings. That said, on first viewing, I loved it, and Justin Hammer is one of my new favorite comic book villains.

I like Iron Man 2. The real fight that was going on the whole time was between Stark and himself. I think the sequel was more of a character development for Tony Stark rather than its actual plot.
Well, everyone's opinions on this movie differ from one another. In short, your mileage may vary.

'Iron Man 2' was a great commercial for 'The Avengers,' but as an Iron Man movie was pretty underwhelming.
It did give us this altername Tom Waits theme though...
