Perhaps shocking no one, it is a Yahoo! article. It is about the "least successful 'Potter' imitators" and lists 8 movies that supposedly imitated the Harry Potter films. The 8 films? 1) Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events 2) Eragon 3) The Golden Compass 4) The Seeker: The Dark is Rising 5) City of Ember 6) Inkheart 7) The Spiderwick Chronicles 8) Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief Obviously not a single one of them are actual Potter imitations, but the article tries to pass them off as supposedly copying the Potter formula of adapting a popular book/series into a high budget, special effects filled film, and ended up flopping instead. You can check it out here.

I don't know, I think Percy Jackson gave off a distinct aura of trying to ride Rowling's coattails.

Yeah, let's be fair here. Eragon was a Star Wars ripoff.

Duh! Of course. No film was EVER adapted from a book before Harry Potter and used a big budget and special effects.

Yeah, let's be fair here. Eragon was a Star Wars ripoff. Oh totally a Star Wars rip off(with a dash of Lord of the Rings thrown in), but it certainly isn't a Potter rip off. Hell Cracked did a better list of Potter imitators.

Eragon ripped off a lot of stuff, from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars. I guess that's to be expected when it's based off a horrible book written by a teenager that should have never been published in the first place.
Though I think one of the things it didn't rip off was Potter, interestingly enough.

I do think that some of them were easier to market and were bigger because of Potter, but outside of Percy Jackson, I don't think that they were ripoffs.

Series of Unfortunate Events a Harry Potter ripoff...How the s***?
Doesn't even look like they explain why.

Like I said, Potter gave those books a gateway into the market, but that's about it.

Duh! Of course. No film was EVER adapted from a book before Harry Potter and used a big budget and special effects. Not to mention these little things that came out during the time frame the article is considering(the 10 years the Potter films have been made in). lol definitely. Yahoo articles are still probably better than some of the horror you'll find on Yahoo answers though

Doesn't exactly help this article when you figure that these numbers are based solely on domestic box office. Quite a few of these films were quite popular in the World markets, total gross of Golden Compass was actually 372M for example.
It also should be noted that these type of films always do good DVD/BluRay numbers.

I remember reader The Dark is Rising in 6th grade, it was the third in the series and had been out a while. Total ripoff.
But Percy Jackson is a definite ripoff.

From what I remember reading, Golden Compass is a Narnia ripoff. Except with an exact opposite philosophy.
