So I finally made the jump and got myself a Blu-Ray player which I should be getting in a few days. But as I was buying an HDMI cable on Amazon, I decided to buy my first Blu-Ray and couldn't really find anything that I really needed. I don't really want to get anything I already own, mostly because I can't afford to yet but also because I've been spending the past like 6 or 7 years watching my DVDs on a PS2 through an S-Video cable. Sure they won't be in true HD but the upscaling will still make them look a hell of a lot better until I'm able to replace them. So I finally settled on getting the International Cut of Red Cliff, which does kinda already violating my rule of getting movies I already own, but I only have the US Theatrical Cut on DVD.
So yeah, anything I should be looking at getting (provided I don't already own it)?

Well, depends on what you are looking for - great movies or great extras with the great movies?
If you can run them down, getting blu-rays of classics like Snow White, Pinocchio etc are essential. I'd also look at the other classics with the big boxes like Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music, Ten Commandments, etc.
Look for sales, see what you like and enjoy.

I'm looking for the kind of movies that would benefit from better video and sound. But considering a bulk of the stuff I watch is kinda crappy, I don't mind sticking to DVD on some things.

Labyrinth is awesome on blu-ray. There are so many details in the puppetry and sets that are missed in SD. I'm sure the same is true for Dark Crystal as well, though I haven't seen it on blu-ray yet.
The Dark Knight is a great blu-ray, and you can usually find it for 10 dollars.
Honestly, aside from used stores or rare sales, Amazon is by far the best place to buy from.
I just picked up The Departed on blu-ray for 3.99 from a local used store.
Upcoming - Star Wars Saga, LOTR Extended Edition

The Danny Boyle sci fi movie 'Sunshine' looks incredible on Blu-Ray.

FYI on buying HDMI cables - go cheap. If you're spending more than 5 dollars for a 6 foot cable, you're overpaying.

Visually speaking, I haven't seen a Blu-Ray film look more spectacular than The Dark Knight. They kept the IMAX aspect ratio for the action sequences, which is really cool.

Yeah, I already own Dark Knight but that movie's good enough for me to double-dip, especially since it's fairly cheap by now.

Also, The Adventures of Robin Hood from 1938 looks GREAT on the format. Also, read this too. There are some things in there you should read up on.

Hellboy 2 is possibly the best overall blu-ray experience. Sound, visual, overall movie quality. It is tops.
