I'm also afraid of the people who've uploaded footage on an account and then just forgot about the account or can't because they forgot a password or something; no way to get it off. You shouldn't be reprimanded for videos uploaded before the law (that's part of the constitution I believe...not being held accountable for breaking a law when it didn't exist), but ya never know. It can't if it was uploaded before the law was made.

If it goes through (though I honestly doubt it will. It tramples too much over fair use to possibly ever be legalized), the internet reviewer community is completely f***ed. Say goodbye to sites like Screwattack and That Guy With the Glasses. Yep. Internet reviewers would be shut down en masse if this passed.

Hate to be the old man yelling at you to stay off the lawn here, but whats a "Lets Play" video? People playing a game through to a certain point (usually to the end) while having running commentary over it. Some people just play through it and comment, others make a comedy show out of it. The big problem is that while this law is made to protect companies from letting leaked footage of games or illegal streaming of movies and events (which I DO support), the language is vague enough to make alot of the things mentioned in this thread criminal acts.

And if the law is shot down(which it hopefully will be), it'll be because of that exact same vague language. If the law was precisely worded and had no vagueness or ambiguity to it, then it would probably easily pass, and no one would honestly be batting an eyelash, but it is because it is so broad in the way it is worded that everyone is worried. This law, if passed the way it is worded, would kill multiple websites on the internet that also happen to be legitimate businesses. It could seriously cost people jobs.

Wouldnt bother me if they were illegal. I thought it was a great and entertaining concept at first but after you listen to the voices of a lot of these people a lot of them have terrible annoying voices and can barely string a coherent sentence together. Just because there are some terrible LPers out there doesn't mean that there aren't some equally great ones. DeceasedCrab for instance is more entertaining than the games that he plays. I'm a huge fan of Let's Play videos. My youtube subscription list is like 95% LPers, and 5% Maffew. BTW, if Maffew were a US resident, he could face criminal charges for Botchamania if this law passes. No - I highly doubt that. If Maffew ever got challenged he would have an incredibly good case for fair use. And Nostalgia Critic, etc would as well. I don't think that this law, if it passes, is going to change anything about fair use.

Not just cost them jobs, but put them in jail.

If this passes then we can just hope that it will remove just leaked footage. I don't think this will pass in the state it's in. Someone doing a review of a movie and going to jail for it violates freedom of speech.

Ah gotcha, I never heard them refered to as "lets play" before. It'll be a shame if they made them illegal. I understand someone trying to protect their intellectual property, but I dont think video snippets with interuptions throughout constitute any type of IP theft

Not just cost them jobs, but put them in jail. And we don't know the length. The length of time they would have to do for each count is dependent on the supposed value of the "performance".

Yeah, from what I hear these laws have been made more than a few times but this is the first that has gotten this far. Without intending to break the ToS for the forums (I wanted to post about this a few days ago but didn't know if it was okay), goverment has been trying to find for some time a way to cut these activities off. I have heard of bills being proposed to ban torrents and things like that too. I am not sure if it will pass or not though...I wish I had the faith in it not passing as you guys did. I'm not sure they're even aware of such a community. Not just cost them jobs, but put them in jail. And we don't know the length. The length of time they would have to do for each count is dependent on the supposed value of the "performance". I was talking to my bro and said the $5,000 value thing scares me. What if someone, say, uploads a clip of a MLP;FiM episode? How easy would it be for The Hub (or whoever does it...honestly i've not seen an episode of it) to just say the value is worth a crapload of money? I don't think any intellectual property outside of garage bands is worth less than $5,000 at any point in time.

See, I sometimes enjoy watching a playthrough of a game where there's no player talking crap going on. Trying to watch playthroughs of a game as I hear the most annoying voices known to man try to be funny (and fail as hard as possible) makes me want to put my fist through my laptop.
So if this were passed, eh, I'm indifferent to it. Maybe they can only arrest the awful ones? :-p

Overall I'm not too worried about this. Even if it passes I will be a little more worried, but I will not be freaking out. Now if people start getting banned off of YT or getting fined, then I'm s***ing bricks.

But how else are we gonna learn about Mawio when he was a baybee? Or learn of Bowser's evil test? I wish we could teleport, like Luigi, to a simpler time.

Yeah, no chance in hell on this one coming to pass. If only because of the fact that it would be absolutely impossible to enforce.

Hate to be the old man yelling at you to stay off the lawn here, but whats a "Lets Play" video? Complete playthrough of a video game with running commentary. LPs can be done using either videos or screenshots, but video LPs are far more common these days. They were originally popularized on the Something Awful forums (and that's pretty much where all the best ones still are), but they've since spread across the internet like wildfire with the rise of sites like youtube. In fact, the spread of horrible LPs on youtube eventually led to a couple of SA goons creating "Retsupurae," the concept of which is to take a terrible LP video and mock it MST3K style.

This sort of thing being anything more than a civil matter is a complete waste of taxpayer's money and just another thing to crowd prisons over.

Honestly, I find screenshot Let's Plays to be much better anyway.
