Ever do this? Not that PS2 games are old old, but 5 or so years is kind of old in video games terms. But anyway, I often like to buy these games brand new as opposed to used just as some kind of loyalty I guess to the product. I don't know what kind of effect this has on the companies bottom line, but it can't hurt can it? I ask this as I just picked up, Okami (new in '06) and Shadow of the Colossus (new in '05) still new in packages.

I prefer to buy them brand new unfortunately the ones I want usually cost more than I am willing to pay so I have to pass on them and settle for a used copy.

Depends if I really can't find a used copy anywhere.

I found a new sealed copy of Street Fighter II for SNES for $20 around '00 or '01. Kinda wish I hadn't opened it in hindsight

I do, on the very, VERY rare occasion that somehow it's actually cheaper to buy a new copy than a used one.
I can't remember what, but I know this has happened to me at Gamestop more than once.

On occasion it is kind of neat to do. I think the last NIB sealed older game I cracked open was Fire Pro D on Dreamcast.

Im not buying new games on EBAY anymore because its a ripoff. I really wanted a brand new copy of R Type Delta for PS1 and there's only 1 listing on there and they want 200 bucks for it. No frigging way. I also want Strider 2 for PS1 unopened and theres a bid starting at 70$ and I dont even wanna pay that much.

Some people are into finding and buying brand new NES games to this day.
Meaning there's also a flourishing market of fake mint NES games. There's an organisation that specializes in taking the boxes and checking if it was re-wrapped or if it is really mint.
I'd collect old games if I had the money, but I wouldn't pay a premium to have it brand new. I'd pay one to get the box and instruction manual though.

don't know if it counts, but I bought Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, and the Deus Ex games via the steam summer sale this year.

While these "Brand new" games are more preowned, I bought Geist for Gamecube last year and Freelancer for PC last month.

2009 isn’t exactly old but I did buy a new copy of Persona 4 recently. It was nice to have a new (as opposed to pre-owned) PS2 game for the first time since 2005ish.

No, and why would I do that? I buy games to play them, not to collect them.

My brother works in a shop that specialises in these and gets older games, as well as DVDs (including a great deal of WWE PPVs), for cheap or even free.

I'll only buy new if I'm buying from a retailer. I'm not a collector (in that I don't keep my games in pristine condition or worry about sell value or anything) so I really don't feel like paying really marked up prices from the secondary market where the original developer/publisher doesn't see a dime. I might as well buy used at that point.

If the price is right, I will. I like knowing the disk is not going to be scratched and I'll have the booklet.

I sometimes do, all comes down to cost really.
A few months ago I bought a new copy of Digimon World for the PS1. I wanted Digimon World 2 as well but the cheapest price on Ebay is something like £70 which is a bit steep.
