Good, and I hope the rest of his tabloid empire dies with it. I'm not one to wish ill on someone's fortune, but with the way Murdoch makes his money, there'll be no sympathy from me if the rest of the ship sinks.

I seriously hope we can keep any political feelings out of this one, because as a news story this is just insane and could lead to soem pretty good discussion. So, you know, just throwing it out there as the thread gets started.
Having said that, I'm just stunned at the inconceivable oddity of it all. Who in the hell greenlights a private investigator to hack (so far) the voicemail of a murdered teenage girl, families of terrorist bombing victims, and apparently soldiers in a war zone?
I get corporate greed, I get a desire to "make headlines", but at some point humanity has to creep in and have someone pull the investigator aside and say "dude...the hell is WRONG with you?"

It won't cause the changes it should. I hear that they're just reopening under a new name and a few staff changes.
So we'll just have "The Sun on Sunday" instead of "News of the World".

Yes, people will have to be constantly reminded that the Sun IS the daily edition of the News of the Screws.

This is a joke. The people in charge, at the head of this, have kept their jobs while everyone underneath them will lose theirs. THe ones who should be taking the blame are the ones who will be shielded, while the rank and file employees who weren't approving this are losing their jobs.

Yeah they'll probably use it as an excuse to get rid of some staff while keeping the same underlying issues. Damn beaten to it, er.. I'll give a fact instead; the News of the world had been going for 168 years. For those outside the UK their sister paper is as bad, these are the lies they made up after the Hillsborough disaster. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsborough_disaster#The_Sun_newspaper

Pfft, judging by an extremely recent domain name purchase, another Murdoch paper (The Sun) will be extending its run to seven days a week to compensate.

I hope the whole corrupt empire dies, but it won't do it without a public boycott, and advertisers with the balls to remove their advertising from the Sun and Times as well, not just the limited boycotts from NOTW that they had planned. Sad thing is, most people will just associate what's been going on with one paper, rather than the culture which likely permeates every paper he owns. Unless something is done, within a few months people will have forgotten, and he'll own our country hook, line and sinker once again.
Got to imagine that Rebekah Brooks has a lot of dirt on Murdoch if he's willing to shut down an 168-year-old paper but keeps her on.

Good riddance. It's a shame that people who had nothing to do with it all will lose their jobs but the paper had to close after everything that's happened. Unfortunately, it means The Scum will now be printed 7 days a week.

Now would be a good time for the rest of the country to follow Liverpool's lead and join the total boycott of the sleazy Murdoch tabloids entirely.
