Getting a tat on my right shoulder, any tips for a tattoo virgin, I fear pain. My friends are making a habit of telling me how much it will hurt and I'll probably cry. Quite nerve racking.

If you find the prospect of getting a tattoo to be so worrisome... then why get one?

Get generic tribal tattoos. They won't push you otherwise.

Don't have any myself but I've bought 2 for others.....from what they say, it feels like a Beesting or a IM Injection (Burns/Stings, but subsides). Keep it covered with Bacitracin for the first week or so, and stay out of the sun. Any Redness (Beyond the first few days) or swelling get to a Dr (Just in case), had a lady get cellulitis because she didn't keep it clean.

Your friends are just being dicks It DOESN'T hurt for everybody. Even if it hurts, it isn't always all that bad. I have a pretty freakish pain threshold so my experiences won't go for everybody, but while my wrist tattoos hurt, getting the one on my inner arm pretty much felt like somebody was drawing on me with a particularly sharp pen. A tip: DON'T drink alcohol to calm your nerves or take anything that thins your blood. It's a bad idea and you could end up bleeding all over the place which is not a pleasant experience. Just try to relax about it. Bring a stress ball to squeeze on. The shoulder isn't an area that's all that bad. Here's a chart showing the areas on the body and how much they hurt to get a tattoo. Keep in mind that this is generalized and some people have very different levels of pain in every area, so you never know. Honestly, after a while the feeling of the tattoo actually tends to be pretty euphoric. I LOVE the feeling of getting a tattoo, which is really pretty common among people who have a lot of them.

i have two on the back of both my shoulders, and they aren't bad at all. some spots you can feel it, and other spots you just feel the vibration of the needle. probably the least painful ones i've gotten.

Been thinking about getting a tattoo for awhile. Glad to hear shoulder is the least painful.

I got both shoulders done. Didn't hurt at all.
The bee-sting comparison is apt. I actually sorta got to diggin' the pain; make of that what you will.

The best way I can describe it is imagine getting scratched while having a sunburn, each person has their own tolerances

I got my left shoulder done last spring. I'm 126 lbs so I'm a small dude. With that said the pain was hit and miss. When it was more on my should blade it felt like a constant bee sting and everywhere else was just a slight irritated feeling. At times it was slightly unbearable but I chalk that up to how skinny and bony I am. If you got some meat to you it shouldn't feel as bad.

Well I have faith in you. If it gets too bad just squeeze the chair you're sitting in. I think you'll be fine. What are you getting anyway?

I don't have any tattoos but I'm hoping to get my first one (Chinese symbol for Angel which is my name) next month for my birthday and I'm nervous too.
Good luck!

I remember hearing that getting them hurts.
I remember saying "Um...then why get one?"
It's just something I'll never get.

This is so true. My last tattoo was a piece I had done on the upper left part of my chest...yes it took 3 and 1/2 hours to complete, and yeah, it started out uncomfortable as f*** (especially when he had to sit at an angle where his arm was kind of resting on the bridge of my nose), but it was sooooo worth it. I loved it. I remember hearing that getting them hurts. I remember saying "Um...then why get one?" It's just something I'll never get. Well yeah. Why become a professional fighter? Why bother falling in love? You accept that pain is involved and when it's all said and done, hopefully you have something you can be proud of.

My advice: Get something you think is lame and stupid tattooed on you hoping the rules of rebellion will hold true and that whatever it is will be considered cool just because it's not cool when you're a geezer.
What about specific old timer ink? Coupons 4-Life? The Bran Buds logo? Stuff costs too much and you damn kids have no respect arched over the belly?

Yeah - you get a couple hours of pain (or several hours of pain depending on the tat ), a couple weeks of an itchy scab and you're left with a lifetime of awesome art on your skin. I get that it's not for everybody, but for me? It's worth every bit of pain. The only problem for me is how much it costs :B
