So, after hearing the gripes about Dragon Age II, I decided to give it a fair shot anyway, since a lot of fanboys hated on Mass Effect 2 and I loved it. But... I just couldn't get into it. I can't put my finger on it but something seems "off" about the entire vibe of the game. The combat change I actually liked, bit as far as story and characters, just couldn't dig it.

I'm in no rush to get it myself. I liked the way you could play as a different race in Origins, but in II, you're stuck as Hawke (which may not be a bad thing, again, don't have the game, can't judge.) Also, what exactly are the changes to combat? Easier menu useage? Complete revamp?  |

It's a decent game, but it's SO paint by numbers. Bioware is not the company I look to for a paint by numbers RPG adventure. I played the entire first one with ALL of the DLC (What they did with the Morrigan storyline supremely pissed me off.), and in one fell swoop they took away all of the charm and fun of the first one and made a Mass Effect clone set in the past. Hawke was nothing more than just a blatant attempt to recreate Shep. I don't play Dragon Age to be Shep. I play Mass Effect to be Shep.

Haven't played it yet. I'm sure it's good but I am a little disappointed in the lack of races. How is dialogue handled in DA2? Is it like Mass Effect where upper right is Paragon dialogue, middle is indifferent and the bottom right is Renegade? Or do they retain dynamics of Origins dialogue options?

I enjoyed the game. I found the new cast of characters to be fun enough (The elf girl was adorable!) and the storyline was pretty good too.
My biggest gripe was the stripped down RPG elements. Like not being able to choose your characters race, not being able to change your allies armour/weapons etc. Seemed pointless to take things like that out which I always enjoy.

I genuinely think DA2 is a good game. Hell I LOVE origins, but DA2 has much better storytelling. Its not the best story perhaps, but how in unfolds over several years, how the city and your companions change, the genuinely horrific moments tend to rise about DA:O's admittedly generic defeat the orcs/darkspawn story. It even improves on this little character and unexpected stories from the original.
However, DA:O is still better. And it's likely because DA:O had around 4 years in development, if not more. DA2 had maybe 2, three max? The problem I have with it is it feels REALLY rushed. The sheer repeated use of locations, the tiny pool of enemies, the uninspired side quests after the first act. The fact that the first act takes around 8-10 hours to do properly and you can rush through the third act in about 3!
It feels like a game that was rushed to reach a deadline and it REALLY suffers for that. Which is a shame, as I really believe the companions are more interesting. Hell I HATED Fenris in my first playthrough, but because of how the friendship/rivalry system works, that actually works. I don't care if i piss him off, I'll still use him to kill things! And that works in a way I've never seen before. It's just a shame that EVERY mine uses the same mine map, that EVERY lair uses the same map, that EVERY warehouse uses the same map. Its cheap and lazy and really hurts the experience.

His look just seemed so generic of the "brooding badass" character right down to the silver hair and the characters name too! At least he wasn't forced onto you though, I managed to avoid using/talking too him as much as possible so he didn't bug me all that much. |

Heh, where do I start ? I was so hyped for DA2 and in the end I was so disappointed. If it wasn't the annoying characters (WTF Anders) and plethora of fetch quests it was the frankly unforgivable repetition of environments - seriously when you have been in the same damn cave for the 5th time you just wanna scream.
And the fact you do nothing for years at a time.
Another year or two and it would have been so much better, so much of it is obvously rushed, the 3rd act wasn't even finished (siding with the mages wasn't fleshed out at all).
Oh and the fact that every mage seemed to be an insane blood mage made the whole thing a bit silly (WTF Orsino).
I am not a fan of the art style, the first time I saw the 'new' darkspawn I honestly laughed. That stopped when I saw what they had done to the elves, though

There's nothing wrong with that system for Mass Effect, but I really loved the way Origins made your actions a little more ambiguous in that you could be a paragon to some and a renegade to others. |

I was hoping DA 2 would show how far they've come with "importing" characters from other games on consoles. I figured DA 2 would have elements like finding out once and for all where Morrigan went, what happened to your Grey Warden, what happened with Sten and his people, what the deal was with Flemeth, what's the deal with the goofy "ENCHANTMENT!" dwarf, ect. I was hoping that, even though we now had this Hawke guy, that somehow my old character could still be imported or something (of course depending on the events of DA: Origins).
Instead, I got this lame story where everything I did in the first game doesn't matter to anyone at all. "Oh, that all happened in far off Fereldan. Don't worry about it...it won't effect us one bit." I couldn't help but wonder, why leave me with all those questions in the first game, and then not address them at all in the sequel? Why not wrap up everything in DLC or whatever and then do your "fresh start" sequel?

Shepard is the ultimate RPG character as he is a blank slate for you to project your actions onto. AND, stripping out skill building does not make it less of an RPG. There are plenty of RPGs that employ a more spartan system. Doesn't defeat the Role Playing aspect. |
