I'm looking for advice of what's a good strategy for fantasy football. What should I go for with my first pick? QB? When should I consider drafting a defense? It's my first time doing fantasy football, so thanks for any advice.

Depends on where you're picking. I normally take an RB first, but if you're late in the 1st-round then grabbing a QB like Phil Rivers (guaranteed to put up huge numbers) is not a bad idea.

Go for the running backs first, then a 'name' QB. Look at last year's stats and see who throws a lot.. not necessarily who wins a lot. Good WR next and then fillers. Watch for team's whose starting RB's get hurt and grab the back up quickly.
Kicker and D get picked last.

Because of the lockout, I also wouldn't recomend drafting any rookies or 2nd year players (I at least don't plan to). But as the season goes on explore your options.

Along with the rookie advice, keep a close eye on teams with new coordinators, since they've had minimal chance to interact with their players. Don't COMPLETELY count out players on those teams, but if you're talking the Broncos, Chiefs (unless it's Charles), or Raiders (again, except McFadden...pretty much the whole AFC West aside from the Chargers) or other teams running new schemes, take them with a grain of salt. Established players mean more than ever this year.
Also, while I would take a RB first, don't sit around for QBs. I've done a few Yahoo mock drafts and the quality of QBs take a couple of HUGE dips. Honestly the QB position is the first one i'd fill on my bench too because of this. I'd say if you don't spend one of the first two picks (MAYBE you could wait for round 3) on a QB, get ready to settle for the middle of the road. And again, if you wait too long for your 2nd string QB, you might be picking from rooks and QBs on short leashes already.
