Not when did it start but what was the thing that tipped it to more crap then redeeming qualities? My brother was just saying the time when boy bands roamed the musical landscape and TRL debuted. That's when they stopped trying to cover the whole musical landscape and did only teeny booper things but he's 22 and never really grew up with MTV or cable that long.

^ I'm 19 and I would actually say around 2002-2004ish is when whatever music in Music Television pretty much died. I mean yeah, the teeny bopper stuff just accelerated it's downfall, but when the networks execs were finally reassured that this reality stuff was more commercially viable than airing music videos and music related programs with stuff like Laguna Beach, Made, the Osbornes, etc it was all over.

The Real World, season 1 episode 1. I disagree on that. The original first few seasons of Real World were great. It was all a bunch of people from differenbt backgrounds with different careers and interesting lives. Somewhere it just became a bunch of douchebags partying and hooking up. I guess if someone could pinpoint the time when MTVs daytime schedule stopped being videos and started being reruns of primetime shows I'd say thats it

I'll also go with the early 2000s, since I really think of a significant moment/show. Pretty much when the whole reality television thing really took off.
And the early Real World was pretty good before it turned into a bunch of morons getting wasted and switching partners more often then square dancers.

For as much flack as it got, TRL was pretty much the only video venue for that channel in the late '90s/early 2000's, so, when it got taken off the air, I think that's where the true decline happened

Immediately after "Video Killed the Radio Star" stopped playing. They started on such a high note, they could never hope to match it.

Honestly, every generation hates the next generation's MTV...
BUT
Even after the reality boom, the big change happened in the mid-2000s when music rights changed and it immediately rendered 85% of their library un-airable.

BTW - In case anyone asks, the exact moment BET began to suck was 1999 when Viacom purchased the network, retooled all of the shows, and slowly phased out all of the independent labels who submitted videos. The exact point of no return was July 4th, 2006 when BET Un:Cut aired its final episode.

I agree that the first couple of seasons of The Real World were pretty good. None of the housemates were in it for fame they just wanted to have an interesting experience. It was when MTV showed nothing but reality shows that the channel began to suck.

You could actually argue that it began in the mid-80s when they started airing programming that had nothing to do with music (remote control, monty python, the young ones, the british comic strip, etc).

When they started to phase music out of their programming during the mid 2000s. Now, it's just a 3 or 6 hour early morning block of music programming on MTV. Yeah, MTV shows videos when no one watches them. They just show reality shows, and sometimes "That 70s Show" and movies all day long after videos.

I remember watching Rap City back in the mid-90s and they had some underground rappers' videos on there. Also, I still remember Caribbean Rhythms.

As for MTV, it started during the Las Vegas season of the Real World. That's when they started to focus more on reality shows full of partying and sex.

To me, MTV died around the mid '90s.
