Does anybody know if there are Sailor Moon DVDs of any kind that are available in the US? I tried looking on Amazon and some DVDs cost a lot, but I am not sure which region they are for. It doesn't have to be of the TV series, it can also be of a movie. I remember catching maybe a few episodes when I was a kid when it aired on a local channel very early in the morning, but I kind of want to check more of this show out. Just wondering about DVDs, that's all.

I would highly recommend going the fansub route for pretty much the entire series. I dunno if there are official subbed DVDs, so you could go that route too, if they exist.
Either way...the dub is pretty amazingly bad, and this is coming from someone who usually doesn't mind dubs. It's just...wow it's bad.

It might be worth looking into to see if (though it's doubtful) there are any official subbed DVDs out there. I got one of the Haruhi movie, but that is more relevant. Actually was surprised at how well it was dubbed - though the timing was off at times - and it wasn't region-coded.

If you're willing to spend a lot, ADV released box sets of seasons 1 and 2...subtitled only. Pioneer/geneon released Sailor Moon S, with both dubbed and undubbed. I'm thinking they released Super S as well, but it's not listed on the box of that. For Sailor Stars, you'll have to find a region-free box set. Here's a link to pictures I took of all the box sets I have of the show: s37.photobucket.com/albums/e67/ChrisMWaters/Sailor%20Moon%20DVDs/?albumview=slideshow

I just read the thread title better.
The ADV box sets are subtitled only.
S and Super S I BELIEVE have both languages available.
Obviously Sailor Stars is Japan only with subtitles.
EDIT: And though I didn't take pictures, there was also a box set of the three movies with both language tracks available.

I'm pretty sure the Super S has both languages available also since it's distributed by the same company. Good luck trying to find them for a decent price though.

Earlier, I looked on Amazon and it appears that some DVDs are Region 1, but is it better to watch them with the Japanese language and English subtitles?

There was always something oddly disturbing about that show. I blame the fan-porn.

If you're looking for the English dub that aired in Canada and the US, they're only available on DVD via the long OOP ADV releases, which cover the complete seasons 1 and 2 over the course of 14 individual volumes. Here, for example, is Volume 1: www.amazon.com/Sailor-Moon-Heroine-Chosen-Show/dp/B0000639E3/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311369037&sr=8-1Of course, I only recommend these if you absolutely have to own the English dub, which most fans are not fond of anyway, considering the extensive edits to make some episodes more child-friendly.

A lot of what was bad about the dubs had to do with contract disputes with the voice actors and extensive editing which involved cutting little things out...like plot points. You'd grow to like a certain voice and then the next episode, she/he would be replaced. There's a reason Stars never made it to the States (*cough trannies cough*, yet it's one of the better seasons. And then Uranus and Neptune being "cousins"....well not in NY anymore . There were some changes to the dub I actually preferred to the original. Renaming Usagi instead of translating her name to Bunny sounds...well, almost as bad as Barbie. And I sort of like that there different voices/accents to the girls as supposed to all sounding sweet (For example, the first Lita sounded like she could kick your butt). Overall, not the worst dub ever by a long shot.
