Seriously, in 95-96 this guy was huge (i know he first hit big with fantastic voyage, but gangstas paradise was much bigger) but only a couple of years later he fell into obscurity. I know rap artists have a short shelf life popularity-wise, but his fall from grace was ridiculously fast.

He was one of the less legit seeming guys, especially doing a song like "Gangstas Paradise". Pop rappers don't last long.

Yeah, it got huge, but so did "All Eyez on Me", and I would never consider that a pop song. Coolio was just not on Death Row or Aftermath, which in the mid 90's meant he was going nowhere in the West.

When you put out a song called "Sumpin' New", but it sounds like you're recycling your older hit (in this case, "Fantastic Voyage"), you're going down in flames pretty quick.

His third album was pretty terrible. Are you talking about "My Soul"? I never heard too many songs from that one. The only song that became a single from that one was I think "C U When U Get There" but that mainly became a single from the "Nothing To Lose" soundtrack. He had a pretty long gap between "My Soul" and "El Cool Magnifico." I wonder if he even had any singles from that album.

Join Coolio on a Fantastic Voyage of flavor...and turn your next dinner into a Foodie's Paradise.

I think when he got on Weird Al about Amish Paradise, the writing was on the wall.

His record label dropped him after his follow up to Gangsters Paradise was less then successful.
In 1993 he broke through with fantastic voyage and then in 1995 he followed it up with the mega success that was gangsters paradise (he also did a cameo on America is slowly dying a hit compilation for Aids awareness). But after the two successful albums he had a flop My Soul (Although the album did have a hit on it with I'll C U when u get there).
My Soul fell just short of the top 50 and his record company dropped him. Also it didn't help that My Soul came out in 1996 and he didn't come out with another album for 5 years. I think had he come out with something in 1998 or even 1999 he might have had a chance at another run.
Coolio just had his time in the 90's and burnt out and didn't fade away. Coolio is truely the Hootie and the Blowfish of rap they both were mega huge in 1995 somewhat relevant in 1996 and fell off the face of the Earth post 1996.

The point I was making he was a pop rapper, that happened to have one serious song, in between rapping about parties, etc. Like if someone like Snoop or Tupac sang that song, it'd seem more legit... you know Coolio wasn't gonna be gang banging.

One of the funniest things I've ever seen is that after last year's Gathering, he got an ICP tattoo but had the word "Juggalo" misspelled on it

I think when he got on Weird Al about Amish Paradise, the writing was on the wall. Well, if I remember right, that wasn't so much his fault, as it was a miscommunication between him, his record company, and Al. His label kind of approved that behind his back, didn't they?

You can only go down after "Gangstas Paradise" and the Kenan & Kel theme song. That would be the peak of anyone's career.

And Coolio cashed the check Al sent him. But that is what I think caused his downfall, so to speak. He went to war with Weird Al. 15 years later, Al has the number 9 record in the country and Coolio is pumping gas in New Jersey.

Coolio later went to star in some B-films and such. You know where your career has gone once you get roles in straight-to-video releases. I think he was still big enough to have a cameo in "Batman & Robin" but 1997 was not a great year for him. The only song that comes close to being a hit was "C U When U Get There." Good song, I will say that, but I don't think that was the main hit for the "Nothing To Lose" soundtrack. The main hit from that compilation was "Not Tonight" from Angie Martinez, Lil' Kim, Left Eye, Da Brat, and Missy Elliott. I think the only other song that became a single for "My Soul" was "Ooh La La" but I was unaware of that song until I found the video of that on YouTube a few years ago.
I think he was still sort of relevant to make an appearance on an episode of "The Nanny" back in 1998 I believe.

Changing musical tastes really.
Most rap fans I know were never really THAT into him.
The fact he did songs for nickolodean shows didn't help his cred too much
