Overall on the show, what would Brian's status be, face or heel?
He has done some face things like helping Peter with organ transplant, but he has done some heelish things too...like the whole episode of him writing a best seller.

Kind of a early 2000ish Kurt Angle'ish heel.

Pretty much. Despite the rant given by the serial date rapist(seriously, you'd think they'd pick a better character to chew out Brian than someone who gives people roofies and stalks his friend's wife, then looks down on Brian for having an attraction to the exact same woman), and his many character flaws, he is still one of the closer characters to having a moral compass and generally tries. I still wish he'd go back to how he was at the beginning of the series though. He worked much better as the dry straightman.

People often hate others who remind them too much of themselves, I think Quagmire's point was that Brian acts all high and mighty, but is no better then he is.

Which is fair, if obviously not entirely true. I know I shouldn't expect a lot of continuity or anything here, I just think the speech could have come from, say, Joe or something, and it would have still worked.

Face that turned heel. He went into ultra political douche mode and that really got to me, because in the first 5 seasons he was the highlight of the show IMO. Even in the gay marriage episode, while he was still in political mode, it was for good reasons rather than just being on his soapbox.

he's a face...unless there's an episode I missed where he was actually a bad guy than he's always been a face, what he say's/thinks doesn't matter because he's portrayed as a good guy

Heel. In the last couple of seasons he turned into a douche & most of the time, he would just go, "I'm better than you because I don't believe in religion I'm so smarter than you. I loved it when Quagmire had that epic rant against him.

The episode where he becomes a bestseller was brutal. And I didn't see the second half, but the Rush Limbaugh episode was a blatant turn.

Heel, besides being a cheap, womanizing, drunk and racist he doesn't even believe in any of the political stuff he says.
He's a big fat phoney.

Brian at the end of the time traveling episode gave Stewie shit about getting him a candle. Brian heelish tendencies are amplified in the newer episodes.

He was awful as a bestseller, but I didn't really pity Stewie given he's tortured and beaten Brian in the past. Seems kind of like just desserts.

Why do I sometimes feel like I'm the only one who gets the Quagmire thing?
The point if it was that Quagmire is a scumbag. He KNOWS he's a scumbag, and he doesn't try to hide the fact that he's a scumbag. Brian is a scumbag who pretends he's high and mighty, I see no problem with Quagmire pointing all that out.

Which is a fair point on most of it, just the points on Lois kind of lost their impact with it. Didn't help that the talk didn't even work, he probably actually got worse.

He is a heel but the wrong kind of the heel. He is not a "I would literally pay to see someone punch him in the face" heel but more of a "I never want to watch this show again because of him" kind of heel.

To be fair, he's more a symptom of a wide sweeping problem. I guess after running out of plots, the characters have warped more and more. I'd even argue Lois at many points is much worse. When did she stop being a fun-loving woman who advocated honesty and understanding and turn into a judgmental, prudish harpy who cared more about keeping up appearances than the actual happiness of her family?
