I replied That wrestling is no different than tv shows and movies. Those people are training themselves to their physical peak and spend time away from their family to entertain people like me. I also told jim about wrestlers taking bumps and continuously getting up for the same thing four to five times. No yelling or screaming, I just reasoned with him.

I think the first point (about tv shows and movies) is the best, standard response.
I don't think the "these guys really get hurt" angle is particularly compelling. I mean, they get hurt, but it's still fake (just like almost everything else in entertainment - including most "reality shows").
But really, the best answer is just to say "yes." Because no amount of explaining will ever make sense to a non-wrestling fan.

When they ask me that question, I laugh so hard because they act like they are revealing some big secret to me. It's especially funny when they are huge reality TV marks and I have to explain to them that most reality TV is scripted too.

as I once said while I was still wrestling. Everything I do in there hurts, I just make it look like it hurts way more than it actually does.
ever fall out of bed? Remember how it felt? That's about a 3 feet fall from a laying position. We do that from a higher height at a higher speed with more force multiple times a match.

I used to work with elementary kids. A couple of them enjoyed WWE. One of 'em, a 3rd grader, was pretty sharp. When another child confronted him about WWE being fake, the 3rd grader responded, "It's not fake. It's predetermined. They know who wins and what they'll do, but it's not like a special effect in a movie. They're really doing all the moves, but they try to protect each other while doing the moves so it doesn't hurt as much as it should. But it's still dangerous. Most of the moves can still kill you."
The other child didn't know what to say.

I always respond Yes it's choregraphed, yes it's predetermined, but you land on your back 20 times on a wrestling ring canvas in a certain time frame and tell me whether it hurts or not

I've started telling people that UFC is fake, too, just to get a rise out of them.
Of course I know wrestling is "fake." John Travolta didn't actually shoot Marvin in the face in Pulp Fiction, either, but they made it look good.......

The best response, I have found, is an eye gouge followed by a dropkick to the kneecap.

I've started telling people that UFC is fake, too, just to get a rise out of them. . The line I use is "I prefer combat sports that acknowledge the fact that their results are predetermined" ;D My whole thing is this: yes, it's "fake," in all the way mentioned previously. But it comes down to respect for the storytelling and respect for the undeniable athleticism on display in every match. It's a soap opera that I prefer to watch as a sport. Plus, there's nothing wrong with being a 24 year old dude who can still suspend some disbelief for the sake of a good time.

My aim this year is to sit through an entire programme of something just constantly reiterating that its fake, and that _____ isnt really a cop, or _____ isnt really a doctor.

When someone says tells me it's fake, I act as appalled as possible, yet in a sarcastic manner.
"Oh my God, it's fake! You mean The Undertaker doesn't really send send souls to hell?!! You're kidding!"
