For those who don't know, the original DX theme comes from a reinterplorarion of the bassline in Donna Summer's 1975 hit "Love to Love You." I just wrote a quick history of how that bassline has been used and recycled over the years (with samples) and thought you might be interested - popularopinions.wordpress.com/2011/02/25/luv2luv/

I don't mean any disrespect by this post, chaz, as I know you've got a keen sense of music.
That said, I do see a slight similarity in the bassline, however, I've never heard anyone else bring the comparison to "Love To Love You" to light. Is this something you've just speculated on, or did you read about the inspiration in an interview or something?
Again, no disrespect or "PROVE IT!" style post, just wondering.

I'm gonna use this thread to state that Rage Against The Machine didn't do the original song. It was The Chris Warren Band aka The DX Band, who also did My Time.

Actually, Peter Berserker did the vocals for that according to Wikipedia, but it could be wrong. I know the Chris Warren Band did the last WWF Superstars theme before it ended in 2000.

This post reminds me, I have a WWE magazine with a section that asks Swagger to name 10 songs on his iPod, and the section boldly suggests that RATM did his theme music.

I didn't see many similarities in those songs. I mean, the bass lines are vaguely similar, but you can only have so many different bass lines.

Thanks for reading everybody! I don't mean any disrespect by this post, chaz, as I know you've got a keen sense of music. No disrespect taken, and thanks. I've never heard the connection specifically expressed anywhere BUT, I think the bassline is directly, or indirectly, lifted. Remember, in the late-90s there was the trend of making knock-offs of popular songs for entrance themes. While it started with WCW's use of Turner owned stock-music (Hardwork Bobby Walker's "Eye of the Tiger" etc.) they soon accessed Jimmy Hart to lend his talents to channel similar output for wrestlers, most notable his take on Nirvana's "Come As You Are" for Raven. While Jim Johnson's great contributions predate any of those by roughly a decade, I think the Degeneration X theme (which he composed and later had the Chris Warren band perform) was an instance of him putting a twist on an existing song. What seems most likely to me is he lifted the bassline from the Digital Underground song (the vibe of "Freaks of the Industry" does seem to go with what creative was going for with DX) and then decided to go overboard with a RATM-esqe sound as they were the bubbling counter-culture rebels of the time.
