I thought it was interesting how a huge organization like the NFL would mention something like this in the middle of their biggest game of the year. It got me thinking about the fact that WWE would never do something like that during Wrestlemania.
Then I got to thinking...WWE wouldn't even do something like that at all. The only time they mention news stories is when it is positive press, and then they tout the hell out of it. Why is there such a big difference between the way this is handled in wrestling and the way it's handled in real sports?

There's a stigma with wrestling that isn't there for any sports.

Well, they did mention Hurricane getting arrested.
...About two weeks before he was released.
Oh, and they mentioned Riley's DUI too.

Why is there such a big difference between the way this is handled in wrestling and the way it's handled in real sports? Because pro wrestling has been treated in the media as a degenerate, horrible business filled with coked out drunken steroid junkies for the better part of three decades. The entire industry is already painted with an extremely biased brush, they don't have the luxury of being able to deal with negative press in a professional manner. Meanwhile, NFL players can do more or less whatever they want, up to and including murdering other human beings, while still being treated fairly by the media and the NFL. When a football player does something wrong, no one blames the NFL. It's partly to do with money and enormous amounts of advertising dollars and partly to do with ingrained cultural bias.

I think they also mentionned Jeff Hardy being arrested for drug possession after he quit. 1. Never saw the Hurricane mention, so I can't say anything about it. 2. Riley's DUI arrest was mentioned...but it was basically just a CM Punk joke on commentary. 3. The Jeff Hardy arrest was alluded to in Punk's promo at the PPV that week, but it wasn't out right mentioned. Someone made a good point about wrestling already having a negative stigma to it but in a way I also disagree with that. I think most of the people that talk about wrestlers using drugs, getting in trouble, and taking steroids are wrestling fans themselves. The media may have made wrestling look like that during the Benoit tragedy, but the NFL and MLB have both had steroid and drug scandals of their own. My personal opinion (and answering my own question in the OP) is that as a "fake" sport, WWE tries too hard to control how they are presented. For instance, it's not uncommon to see tons of empty seats while watching certain baseball games, but if a WWE show had that many empty seats they would be covering them up with tarps and trying their damndest for it not to show up on TV. They also use crowd shots from previous shows, edit out mistakes whenever possible, and have even completely replaced audience chants on DVD releases. It's almost like WWE thinks since they're not a "real" sport, that nothing has to be real at all.

And I sure the NFL wasn't too happy about it either.

Why is there such a big difference between the way this is handled in wrestling and the way it's handled in real sports? It's a little different though...the Superbowl was the broadcast of a real and unscripted event and with wrestling we have kayfabe. So they only times they bring real life events into things (normally anyways) is if it helps the story, even if it's a negative. Besides the WWE and wrestling in general does enough stuff during it's storylines that makes them look bad they don't need to address things that really happened. I know this isn't the WWE, but didn't Goldberg get "arrested" during one episode of Nitro for trumped up rape charges? I wanna say they were by Ms Elizabeth or someone. a few others..... Hey BIG SHOW I GOT URRRRRR DADDDDDY! Katie Vick Lunchtime Suicide Heidenrape Human Sacrifice Hanging The Big Bossman Val Venis Choppy Choppy The 5,910 times someone has been run over by a car or assaulted back stage

That was the (kayfabe) reason Goldberg didn't get his World Title shot. He was arrested, so Hogan took his place, and...fingerpoke.
