I have thought about this long and hard, and at the end of the day this is the conclusion I have come to when it comes to why WWE has such a hard time with the mainstream media.
I believe its because they can't take any credit for WWE's rise, and also they haven't been able to bring it down.
The other major sports? Well the newspapers made all of them big deals, with the exception of the NFL. The TV networks made the NFL a big deal.
WWE for a long time has had to get its own name out there. They had to build their fanbase pretty much on their own. I guess one could make a case NBC and MTV helped them. Eh NBC gave them a slot, late nights, on the weekend. Did NBC promote those shows? WWE had to do most of the work.
In MTV's case, they were still a fledgling cable channel at that point, so thats more a case of them helping to promote each other.
But despite everything, even in the down years WWE has been able to maintain a pretty strong fanbase doing it pretty much by themselves. Other entertainment properties would kill to be able to do that on their own with pretty much no outside help.
The you talk about all the controversies, and tragedies that should have brought them down. Steroids, deaths, content etc. They've gotten through all of it with not many defenders. Now I'm not saying they come out of those situations looking like daisies, but they still maintain a strong core fanbase. Even now with UFC dominating the PPV business, WWE just keeps going, not as strong but going nonetheless.
I just think the media hates that, its not something they helped make big, and its something they just can't bring down no matter how hard they try. They'll keep feeding common people about how silly and fake wrestling is, and WWE will keep plugging along despite it.
Just something I have been thinking about.
