Now that both of their careers are pretty much completely finished, who will go down in history as the greater wrestler of the two?

Great, this one again lol Draw. Shawn may have been better overall in ways, but Bret was a much better champion during his time.

Shawn. He could do more in the ring than Bret in terms of speed/high flying in addition to a strong technical base. He also had a singles career that spanned two completely separate generations for the company. He headlined WrestleMania with both Austin and Cena.
I guess it comes down to how you define wrestler. For me, even in-ring wise, HBK is in the top 2 if not the greatest ever. However, if you define it in terms of significant moments and long term success, I think HBK wins it no matter the equivocal judging of in-ring work.

Bret shot it all down with that last terrible terrible run.

I've got to go with Shawn. He had charisma, and didn't shove it down our throat that he was a great technical wrestler.

You didn't need words to get what was happening. But Shawns Matches were much more emotional. Dare I say, Shawns Matches were the only ones nowadays that made you care who won and who lost. And for the "Better champion" arguement... Is Great Khali a better wrestler than Ted Dibiase because he was a better Champion???

Shawn. Bret's easily the most overrated wrestler in the history of the entire universe.

Bret's my favorite wrestler of all time but even I have to admit that Shawn Michaels' legacy stands above Bret's. WCW and the concussion are primarily to blame, and Shawn Michaels' amazing second run puts it over the top.
If we were to compare Bret/Shawn based only on their first runs in the WWE I would say Bret hands down, but Shawn had a great first run, then a legendary comeback that unfortunately Bret physically couldn't compete with.

Bret was one of the best champions in WWE history. However, his WCW run and retirement are the sole reasons he is not regarded in a greater light than Shawn.
If you asked me this question in 2001, I would probably say Bret Hart
However Shawn's comeback puts him head and shoulders above Bret as far as a legacy is concerned

Up until the end of 1997, Bret. HBK having an extra decade of even better performances swings it hugely in his favor overall.

It's really not fair to compare the two now. Shawn has/had the benefit of a comeback and putting on classic matches with Angle, Taker, Edge, Jericho, and so forth. Due to Bret's concussion and stroke later on he couldn't compete.
Truthfully they're both legends and both deserve all the praises as far as wrestling, emotion, and storytelling is concerned. Both of them will go down as two of the greatest wrestlers in history.

Shawn.
I hated his personality and the fact that he called himself the Heartbreak Kid well into his 40s, but he put on much more entertaining emotional matches imo

IMO, Shawns Matches with (an at the time very green and inexperienced) Chris Masters or La Resistance were more watchable than Bret vs. Dino Bravo or Jean Pierre Lafitte.

in this argument I think about how they'll be remembered in 20 years time.
Don't get me wrong I love Bret and he's my all time Fav. But in 20 years when people are talking about Shawn's great matches. Bret will be remembered for the screwjob, his concussion/stroke and losing his brother. It's sad but it's true.

And Shawn sadly might be remembered for losing his Smile, Never jobbing, backstage politicking, The Clique, Pointing at his Crotch a lot, Posing for Playgirl, Being called gay, and a poor male Stripper - Gimmick, his thinning Hair and lots of others. As Shawn said it best himself, people were always judging him by his personality, but everyone is different. He likes stuff others don't. He enjoyed ticking people off and adding fuel to fire. I can relate to that, I'm the same way. Shawn is a Legend. Ask any Wrestler who they had their favorite Match against. Those who don't say Flair, will say HBK. Bet on it.

But his comeback has over shadowed that. Let's not even bring up Bret's comeback.

Bret shot it all down with that last terrible terrible run. I disagree entirely. Given his physical limitations, and ignoring the McMahon match, he did fine. His performance in the SUmmerslam match made up for it entirely. But that being said, Shawn was the better of the two.
