I've never liked Rey but it surprised me when he came back from an injury and beat someone using the top rope splash instead of a west coast pop.
Is he just getting old? Fat? Lazy? Or just feels like giving someone an ole belly flop is more effective

More of a guess than an actual answer, but I think it has something to do with his knees. But, since he still does the 619, that feels kinda like a wrong guess...

He doesn't work with as many guys as he used to that might take the west coast pop as well. He works with a lot bigger guys now. If he worked with Tyson Kidd more, we might see it.

I think his knees have slowed him down. That and he got roided up.

Keiji Mutoh has essentially eggshells for knees these days but his finisher involves him kneeing a guy in the face. So, I think your guess is a good one; Rey could just be fighting through the pain when he does it.

Rey himself said that it was his bad knees that forced him to remove the west coat pop from his move list in an issue of wwe magazine.

That move is the reason why his knees are shit to begin with.

It doesn't help that you can only hit a move like that on guys less than 250 lbs max, and Rey routinely fights guys bigger than that now.

Rey should go fat and feud with Horny. With the 619 chokeslam combo, a new facet of his career could start. FAT Rey.

I remember Akio nearly breaking his neck when taking the West Coast Pop.

It still baffles me how anyone can hate Rey. He's one of the best workers WWE has ever had.

I remember Akio nearly breaking his neck when taking the West Coast Pop. Well, Yang was great at taking those DDT-like headbumps. Like an exclamation point. Same for RVD, Val Venis and Robert Roode.

Too fat? The body-image preconceptions of the pro-wrestling world continue to confound and enrage me.

Too fat? The body-image preconceptions of the pro-wrestling world continue to confound and enrage me. TBH, I've almost stopped coming to this forum because of it. I'm a 160 lb dude and it bothers me, can't imagine how someone who has battled weight loss their entire life feels when they see stuff like this. But I've chalked it up to a problem with society as a whole and not just this forum, so I stay.

Without Matt there to clear out the Smackdown snack table, Rey has been unable to control himself
