I missed the speech because I assumed it would be going on last, and had some things to do, but apparently a 5 person gauntlet match for a throw away PPV is more important.
I remember an article in WWE magazine before he debuted that showed him Val Venis and others training at OVW (maybe it was HWA?) and I picked him out of the group as the "cool one". I loved him from the debut with the coming through the crowd, and as his character evolved I always liked his in ring work, his mic work, and his personality in general.
Just stunned. Sick to my stomach. Thank you Edge.

If this is legit, then I hope Edge has a healthy and happy post-career. I grew up in Toronto so I always liked the Canadian guys. Edge was a great talent. But better to leave the business on your feet than in a wheelchair.

Always one of my favorites. He could be funny and reckless, part comedian, part kamikaze.
I'm definitely gonna watch his "Decade of Decadence" DVD later tonight.

He has done it all. Easily first ballot Hall of Famer when he is considered eligible

I guessed, with the suddenness with which the announcement was being teased on Raw, that something had come up very serious and with very little warning that brought the "rumours" out. Funny, though: not a peep from the boards until it was confirmed tonight.
For this kind of speculation to pop up so suddenly, I figured he had an injury, or complications thereof, or even a catastrophic illness, that would _not_ let him have one more match. It sucks, but I can appreciate why he would choose not to be a statistic on Mark Mero's list, but to live the rest of his life as well as possible.

My "Edge Story":
A few weeks after Edge debuted, I said he'd be a main eventer someday. My best friend at the time didn't see much in the guy and basically scoffed at me.
There was a period of time right before he won his first IC title that they were doing literally nothing of note with Edge, and even I began to believe that he was going to become yet another random forgettable midcarder. After he won and lost the IC title in the blink of an eye, my friend said "Well you were right. They finally did something with Edge."
Edge then settled into the midcard for a while. We'd sporadically banter about whether or not Edge would ever main event until he won the belt at NYR. I jumped up and down like a little schoolgirl screaming "SEE! I TOLD YOU! TOOK NEARLY TEN f***ING YEARS, BUT I TOLD YOU!"

So, I've say here stunned for a few minutes (and teared up a bit), I'm just completely at a loss still. I know, I'm making it sound like he died, but he's easily been in my Top 5 his entire run and alot of that as my favourite wrestler so this is a really, really sad moment for me.
When I get home, I think I'm gonna have an Edge marathon. I need to cheer myself up, this has been a really depressing day to be a wrestling fan

Edge has consistently been one of my favorites since the E&C days, and his heel run as The Rated R Superstar is one of my favorite heel runs of all time. He made Raw watchable for me.

I'm pretty much stunned about this. I will say Edge, you are one of my most favorite wrestler ever. I have been fan of his since 2001. He give us a lot of classic match over the years. I still remember HBK Vs. Edge from Royal Rumble 05 as one of my favorite matches. The Edge and Cena fued is also a classic to me.
Thank you, Edge for all of your hard work over the years.

Edge has long been a favorite of mine. Hopefully, he can have a healthy life outside of the ring. I'm sure that Vince will take care of him and make him a WWE Ambassador or something.

I don't know what Edge's future will be. I think the guy has the potential to be a great trainer or color commentator.
I just hope that we'll see him again soon.

It's legit. us.wwe.com/inside/edge-announcementDoubt they'd post this on their website... In 2003, Edge underwent a two level spinal fusion of the discs between his C5, C6 and C7 vertebrae. After being cleared to compete, The Rated-R Superstar returned to the ring, resulting in stenosis of the spine, or a narrowing of the spinal column, above and below the fused discs. This narrowing resulted in less and less of the vital fluid needed to protect the spinal cord. Medical professionals cannot clear Edge to compete ever again in WWE since doing so could result in paralysis or even death.... then have him wrestle.
