Are fans so f***ing paranoid that they don't believe anything anymore? Get over yourselves and show him some respect, gosh. To be fair, they've worked retirement angles before... But not with a guy who's at a very high risk for immediate paralysis.

When that segment started I thought there was no way it was real, but having watched it and the aftermath I'm convinced. While there've been times I've not been so big on him, in general I've always been a big Edge fan. Should have ended the show.
Has anyone retired while World or WWE champion before? I wonder how they'll address that.

My thoughts on Edge. I do remember the promos of him coming in back in 1998. He was put over as one of the new, up and coming stars back then. I saw the Off the Record shows with Edge on them, where he would sit on the rafters while they did interviews. Edge was apart of one of my favourite teams in WWE history, Edge and Christian.
An incredible wrestler, could do everything. I'm proud to be a wrestling fan, knowing that someone like Edge was a wrestler.

I'm stunned. I knew Edge was likely retiring sometime next year when his contract was up, but wow. I don't know what to say, he's been one of my favourite wrestlers since he got to WWE. I've watched his entire WWE career, and it seems like only yesterday he was "Reeking of Awesomeness" with Christian.
Man, I'm just.... wow, man.

What annoys me about this..... They supposedly "knew" about this earlier in the evening, and they've been promoting his speech since before Raw started, yet they had to wait until *after* the speech to "confirm" it? Sounds to me like they wanted to make sure the retirement angle wasn't a work first, then raced to their computers to be the first to report on it. If they really did know it, why didn't they say something in the nearly TWO HOUR window they had saying "The retirement angle they're promoting isn't a work"? EDIT: Don't mean to be disrespectful, but to me, it's disrespectful for the dirtsheets to hop all over the Edge story to generate more web hits Its disrespectful and completely pointless. Did you think maybe it its possible that their source didnt confirm until after it aired? Also if you read their statement: They werent told what it exactly was and the WWE was hyping a "could it be" scenario. They didnt flat out say he was retiring. IMO they were smart by not kneejerking and running with something they weren't absolutely 100% sure of. Everyone's so eager to call "newz" on things. Its completely ridiculous.

To be fair, they've worked retirement angles before... But not with a guy who's at a very high risk for immediate paralysis. Yet we see wrestlers come back all the time from injuries they claim are career threatening. So shut up. Geez. Anyway, much respect to Edge. Hopefully this is just a new chapter opening in his life. Guy deserves that send off.

He definitely had a great career. One of my most vivid memories of him actually was the night after the tragic death of Owen Hart. Edge did a brief commentary, and was clearly disturbed as he described being the last person to ever have a match with Owen at a house show the night before that horrible accident. Of course, I remember those "Team E&C" promo's fondly; those two cut some of the funniest interviews and backstage segments I had ever seen. My favorite was the one where they tried to weasel out of a match by saying Christian was sick, and Foley came into the men's room to find Christian pouring water into a toilet while saying "Aw Mick I'm totally barfing!"
I would hope WWE can still use him in some capacity, perhaps as an announcer. He still talks a good game, after all.

I...don't really know what to say here.
Edge returned from a mild injury the night I started watching WWE again in 2002. And from that day, he's been my favorite WWE guy, possibly even my favorite wrestler period.
He could drag a good match out of anybody.
Gonna miss seeing him on TV.

Edge: "My career yada yada yada." Me: "Bullshit." Edge: "Christian yada yada yada." Me: "Bullshit." Edge: "Hulk Hogan vs. Ultimate Warrior..." Me: "Bu...Bullshit." Edge: "Live Sex Celebration with Lita..." Me: "Bulls...Wait. What?" *Edge leaves and no ADR* Me: "Uhh..." *Edge goes backstage and is saluted by the entire roster* Me: "Uhh..." *Edge hugs Dolph Ziggler while Vickie claps* Me: "Oh shit..."
That was pretty much my reaction. I'm 98% sure it's legit, but this is still pro wrestling after all. Trust nobody.

As serious as his condition is at this point, he's one of the lucky ones. He said it himself. Thank god WWE made him go get more tests done when they did and thank god he isn't a stubborn "old school" guy who just wanted to rub some dirt on it and get back out there. Reading that official link from WWE.com, it gives you chills to think that in just a couple of weeks he was going to be in a high profile, lengthy ladder match. Actually forget chilling, it's terrifying to think what could have come from that. His life literally could have ended.
I wish he had closed the show, but knowing how some of these guys are he's probably too humble to make it all about him. He could have had this announcement hyped for a week and done it next Monday. He just wanted to go out. He really did get to go out on his own terms in a way.
He's been one of my all time favorites for over a decade now. He's definitely one of the guys you're going to have a near impossible time filling the gap left behind now that he's gone.
Thanks for 19 years of busting your ass man. Hope your post-career is as rewarding as the last near 20 years have been.

I hope he can take some time off and then come back in some capacity, the character Edge is such a staple of WWE, Smackdown! in particular, not having him around in some way would make the show less interesting for me. I'm glad Christian is in the position hes in right now, I can see why they brought him in. Love ya EDGE! RATED R FOR LIFE!

Has anyone retired while World or WWE champion before? I wonder how they'll address that. They probably haven't even figured that out themselves yet. Edge didn't even come out with the belt, nor did we see a lot of the Smackdown guys. They're all likely at wherever Smackdown is being taped tomorrow, and I fully expect some kind of Edge tribute then, along with them addressing the belt situation. That said, if ADR attacks edge tomorrow and this does end up being one giant work, a lot of people (myself included) are gonna feel like real big idiots.

He should retire. With his injury history and the fact he's done about all he can do it makes sense.

I'm glad i watched him wrestle live on several occasions and now he leaves because his well-being is endangered. At least and most importantly, he retires while he's still on his 2 legs. I'll miss him but i can't stress enough the importance of him avoiding being stuck in a wheelchair.
It's a case of health way before ego and pride.

What a huge loss to the WWE. He truly was one of most innovative characters that they had in the past several years. The ultimate opportunist moniker fit him well, because he's one of the few guys that really made the most of the situations he was in, both good (various ladder matches) and bad (the whole Matt-Lita love triangle); he excelled no matter what. And personally, watching him lose in one Elimination Chamber only to come back and win the second one back in 2009 was one of the most creative and exciting things I've ever seen on WWE television.
His matches at the Rumble and Elimination Chamber this year were amazing, too, so he definitely went out on a high note.
Other than that, I don't really know what to say. I'm still in shock. Part of me hopes that he is revealed to be the RAW GM. But the other part of me wants him to go home and just rest and be happy. He definitely deserves it.
