Yeah, I know he would be better than cole, but....
I always thought Joey's strength was his insane knowledge of wrestling moves (especially helpful with the guys from mexico and japan) and his ability to sell the really hardcore violence.
WWE today really doesn't have either of these things, and just needs someone to get over angles. I'm not sure that that is really Joey's strong suit.
Discuss.

He'd do fine. Selling the stories are supposed to be the color guy's job anyways.

His play by play is there for a few matches on Edge's DVD. My favorite moment of his 'E commentary was from the hardcore match at WrestleMania 22.
*Foley puts on Socko*
Joey: It's not hardcore, but it works!
*Foley wraps Socko in barb wire*
Joey: Okay, now it's hardcore!

He did play by play for RAW for a little while. He was good, but it wasn't the same Joey Styles that we all know and love. He was told to "tell stories" and I just don't think that's Joey's....style.
That said, even the WWE sell-out version of Joey Styles is better than Cole.

There's plenty of WWE announcers that know the moves and have lots of knowledge, they're just generally not favoured if they do, so they stick to the guidelines.

ECW treated its matches like athletic events, so the play-by-play needed to be akin to what you'd find on ESPN. Joey's play-by-play style fit extremely well.
WWE treats its matches like a story, so the play-by-play needs to be akin to a story's narrator. Joey's style doesn't fit quite as well.

That already happened too. How was it? It had it's moments, but you could tell pretty quick that he had stopped giving a f***. I think he's much better off where he is now, he just never quite clicked in the WWE environment. Plus, the job security, and quite possibly pay is better as a behind the scenes guy. And Vince must really like him because he gets away with alot on his Twitter account

The Styles/Lawler/Coach announce team was a total trainwreck, in my opinion.

WWE treats its matches like a story, so the play-by-play needs to be akin to a story's narrator. Joey's style doesn't fit quite as well. It's not like Styles came from the 1972 AWA. ECW had plenty of soap opera stuff, sports entertainment, and over-the-top unrealistic violence and spots. I thought he adjusted well to WWE - he just had to drop most of the sarcastic/cynical stuff, and his overrated catch phrase, and play it more straight, which he was able to do well, IMO. I would have liked to see him on a 2-man booth on RAW though.
