There was that post on Wikipedia like 14 hours before the bodies were discovered, from an IP address in Stamford, Conn., where WWE headquarters are -- saying Benoit missed the PPV because of the death of his wife.
I believe Benoit was in contact by text message with some WWE people during that time.
Does anyone have a good theory about what really went down with that post? I find it hard to believe that someone didn't know something -- maybe not that he had killed his family, but maybe that he had texted someone saying his wife had died.
It's all too much of a coincidence, and if this has ever been explained I guess I somehow missed it.
I'm not looking to stir things up and in absolutely no way do I want to start a thread that turns into a debate about Benoit's merits as a human being or lack thereof -- please lock it if this takes a turn the wrong way, but I am seriously curious about this incident and this forum is probably the best place to find a real answer.

Shouldn't this be in the WWE section?

I don't remember exactly what happened, but wasn't it traced back to a guy who had posted that based on a rumour he had heard online? If I'm not mistaken, it turned out that he had a history of Wiki vandalism

Pretty sure the ip went to some college kid who made a rather sick coincidental remark.

just some guy screwing around. as someone who used to edit on wikipedia (before i got sick of the bulls*** like 95% of the rest of the wrestling fans on there), people do stupid stuff like that for no reason, like this one guy that would mass edit bios of wrestlers saying they died.

Yeah, but the fact that it was in Stamford, Conn., of all places -- that doesn't make you wonder if he wasn't telling the whole truth?

Yeah, it was trolling gone wrong. Though it's always good when a troll gets exposed as the anonymity is one reason they act like douches.

I'm pretty sure it was just a teenager who was making a sick joke as the excuse for Benoit not being at the PPV that night. It's odd, but coincidental that he was in Stamford, CT.

Wiki vandalism happens all the time. This was just a case of wrong place, wrong time for him.

It was a kid who was eventually interrogated for it:
The moral is don't mess with Wikipedia.

interesting to see the vids of his investigation, its amazing how something that may seem so innocent and joking can quickly turn round and bite you in the ass HARD

Nothing to this, as already stated. Just some young douche being a douche and it bit him in the bottom, only slightly though. Still, I'm sure he'll be living off this story in bars for the rest of his life.
"Do you know who Chris Benoit was?"

Welcome to Wikiality (TM of Stephen Colbert). Do any of you think that it's a case of WikialityTM gone wrong?
Didn't that same person try to add some credibility to the storyline by saying that "Meltzer reported it"? And that comment very much put him (Meltzer) in the hotseat?

Yup, just a coincidence that he was in Stamford.
