The poll about Miz and Edge and who will drop their title first got me thinking. With Edge I really wouldn't care, but if Miz keeps it a while it sets a good precedent for him.

Edge's first was 3 weeks. He did alright. Cena and Batista both had 9 month reigns I think.
Plus, Miz has had since the day after Survivor Series. Thats pretty long for a first reign.

For some, it can set a standard for the rest of their career. See JBL.
For others, it's best that most of the bad ones are forgettable. See Dolph Ziggler.
But a few can just be horrible, in which case it's pretty hard to recover from. See Rey Mysterio.
As for someone who had a horrible one and didn't recover (yet...hopefully), Jack Swagger.

I don't think Swagger's was all that bad. It should have been a lot better booked, but Orton laid down clean as a sheet for him, which helped a little.
I think the big problem was not drafting Orton to SmackDown, and thus not following up on their title feud.

Edge only held it for three weeks but it was very memorable. He won it in memorable fashion by cashing in the Money at the Bank after Cena had one a bloody elimination chamber match. It created a lot of buzz as I recall. Then he had a memorable TLC match with Flair on Raw before losing it back to Cena. It moved Edge to the next level.
I always thought they took the title of Eddy Guerrero too quickly. But maybe it was Eddy having issues. I thought JBL's character hadn't been established enough for a WWE Title run but it ended up creating another memorable character.
Randy Orton's first world title reign showed some promise but it fizzled quickly, thanks in part to his face turn and HHH. It took him a while to rebuild himself after that but he turned out fine.

They don't matter at all really. Your only ever as good and as over as your last match/showing. Things like this are rememberd and cared about by a select few, the fans that matter, the marks, couldn't care less down the line.

I have to agree that it's the events that occur during the title reign that matter more than its length. The Rock's first reign was less than two months, but it began with one of the best heel turns ever and ended with one of the defining moments of the Attitude era, leading to an awesome series of matches with Mankind in which they traded the title back and forth. By contrast, Chris Benoit's title reign lasted five months, but apart from a fantastic beginning at WM20 and some good matches thereafter, nothing particularly memorable or interesting happened, and people just stopped caring.

To supplement this wonderful explanation, the first title reign is only as good as said title holder can make it, given the circumstances.
