If I can mention something--Beth didn't just arbitrarily get put in Jillian's place. They had been very slowly building up to to the Beth vs Melina storyline (pretty much since Beth redebuted as Melina's 'secret weapon' against Candice), and those two teaming up against Ashley and Maria was a way of furthering their storyline in addition to doing the Ashley/Maria storyline over Playboy.
They had booked that quite intelligently. They gave four women a WM spot, furthering two storylines by having them arc into one, while at the same time, they continued to have Mickie as Beth's biggest threat and arch-rival for a few months afterward (as well as during Melina's injury) to let her stay as relevant as possible as well.
2008 was a brilliant year for the divas in that respect. I think 2007 would have been even better, but it was kind of tarnished by Ashley getting a WM spotlight in a singles match, not to mention Candice's ridiculous push a few months later.
2008 was a good year, particularly because you had Mickie, Beth, Katie Lea, ande Melina all giving good matches, while the Divas title on Smackdown also had some okay matches.
But I'll defend 2007 for these reasons:
*Mickie vs Melina at Backlash is terrific.
*Candice winning the Women's title was great, ecspecially because she improved alot in the ring and was a very good top babyface.
*Beth vs Candice was a good feud.
*Beth's first title reign was awesome because she had this big aura of invincibility that she doesn't neccesarliy have now.
I have to disagree about Candice being a good top babyface. Mickie James was vastly more popular and was a better wrestler at the same time. To try and get Candice over, they went to extreme lengths. They fed Melina to her in the same way that an angler feeds a tuna to a great white. They characterized her as a Renaissance-type diva (They portrayed her as being hotter, a better wrestler, and more morally upright than the others) even though the audience wasn't buying it (mainly via the first one; the audience never found her ugly, but compared to the other main divas, she wasn't as popular for her looks as they were). To top it off, they even put her in a main event with a bunch of guys, hoping to max out her sympathy to the fans.
They could've just as easily made her a second-tier diva and let Mickie continue to be the main player, but instead, they pushed her to the back of the line until Candice got injured.
