Neither guy was Hogan/Warrior or Austin/Rock, but they were the cornerstones of arguably the worst era in WWF history(the mid 90s). So who drew more money, and who was more beloved by the fans?

Bret probably wins out prior to '98. Shawn obviously nowadays wins, given he had many more years of wrestling.

I'd have to say Bret considering how much of an international star he was.

Shawn just for how long he was around. Bret definitely pre-Survivor Series. I wonder what could have happened, if Bret hadn't gotten injured and went back to the WWE to finish out his career?

Bret in the early 90s, Shawn in the late 90s.

I've always thought Shawn was the bigger star in the States, while Bret was a bigger star internationally.

At this point? I think Shawn's pretty well eclipsed Bret due to his comeback.

If we are talking before Shawn's retirement in '98 then it was definitely Bret. Shawn's championship run as a face was not good and the fans turned against him at Survivor Series '96. While Bret always had the respect of the fans, there were huge segments of the audience that didn't respect Shawn at all during that run for many reasons including posing for Playgirl and not losing titles in the ring.

Honestly... talking to non-wrestling fans of my age (25)... more people remember Bret Hart. This is due solely to video games and because the Sharp Shooter was a favorite way of guys to win in video games.

Mid 80s to mid 90s - Bret, late 90s to now, HBK. Overall I'd still say Bret since he's more of a global star.

Yeah, but Bret Clark eclipses them both.

I'd have to say Bret considering how much of an international star he was. This. He may not be as big in the US, but go anywhere in Canada, Europe and many other countries and Bret was a way bigger star. Now? Not as sure, because HBK had that huge second run, but I still think it would be Bret in the long run. He was on The Simpson's for cryin' out loud

Shawn's late run put him significantly above Bret in my opinion.

Did HBK get a role in the Simpsons?

I'd say Bret's popularity at the time he came back was starting to wane. There were times when HBK got a much bigger response than Bret's. Shawn was still riding high with the "Boyhood Dream" thing, his star was on the rise while Bret was being faded into the shadows. Though he did reclaim his spot once the anti-american gimmick was born.
