Simply put, what was the starting point of the Attitude Era?
Austin/Bret at Wrestlemania 13?
Austin stunning Vince for the first time?
When Raw switched to the long ramp/big screen?
Bret getting Screwed?
DX Forming?
What are your thoughts?

The changes may not have come right away, but imo the starting point was Austin's speech after winning King of the Ring.

I remember Vince doing a pre taped segment on Raw basically saying that the fans were tired of having their intelligence insulted and the then WWF was going to shake things up. That was the official declaration to me.

I think the Attitude Era, as far as what people always talk about started the night after Wrestlemania XIV. When most people on here talk about 'Attitude' they're talking about Austin vs McMahon, the Ministry, The Rock, Austin and Mankind winning the Title DX vs NOD, sex and obscenities. All of this either started or went full on in early '98. From late '96 to the end of '97 the WWF was slowly changing it's image and heading in that direction. You'd have Sable in a skimpy bikini, Austin stunning McMahon and DX showing their asses but everything went in to overdrive when Austin won the belt.

I generally consider any point where Goldust exists to be part of the Attitude Era.

I'm inclined to say it started for real when Austin beat Michaels, and ended at Mania 18 when most of the show was WWF vs. WCW.

It started just after WM XIII and ended with WM X8.
You can see huge changes asthetically in regards to XIII - XIV and X8 to XIX.

Austin/Bret, Survivor Series 96.
The beginning of that feud set everything in motion.

It was when the intro changed to the firey warehouse with the initial usage of "The Beautiful People", then a reworked "Thorn in Your Eye" cue. THAT was the official declaration.

The double turn that ended up with the anti-hero as a face and the franchise babyface as an insane cursing heel would be the starting point. Maybe not officially, but it was born there.

I agree, and for the exact same reason. This match helped blur the line between good and bad, heroes and anti heroes. Bret SHOULD have beaten the crap out of Austin for all he's done and the fans SHOULD have loved every second of it. The heel SHOULD have tapped to the conquering hero. Everything changed with that match

The Monday after Bret left. Bret (and the entire Hart Foundation) were really the last of the New Generation era of wrestlers.

Everything changed with that match Yep, you went into the match with a white meat babyface and probably the biggest dick heel that's ever been in the company (I dunno how many people remember Austin before the turn), and they made the switch. And it worked. That's a massive change in direction. The rest of the stuff took time to work itself out, but still. It starts there.

While the shift in tone was gradual and took over a year, I'd date the start of the Attitude Era to right after Survivor Series '97, both since that's when the "WWF Attitude" ads started running and because that PPV was the last hurrah of the feud that'd been running off and on for the previous five years between the New Generation's two top stars, Bret and Shawn.
