I remember the quote by Jim Cornette that went something like this - "Can you imagine WrestleMania being headlined by Spanky?"
It makes me wonder what effect a name can have on a wrestler? The likes of McGillicutty especially have been given a name that just seems..... rubbish and it hasn't grown over time.
I remember thinking "Nexus" is a rubbish name for a stable but now I think it's fantastic and I couldn't imagine the original Nexus group having any other name.
Can some bad names grow and become good? Hunter Hearst Helmsley turned into HHH.
Do people look too much into names?

It can definitely go a long way towards intentionally sabotaging someone's career.
Yes, the best would theoretically be able to get over regardless of a dumb name, but I always refer back to Stone Cold's list of potential names he was given. And if you're not down with that, I've got just two words for you...
"Chilly McFreeze".

A miserable little pile of secrets? As for the names themselves, as long as they don't sound like a bad pun or literation or are too generic, they won't seem bad when its wrestler is pushed and that is the way that the name may come to sound more "appropriate" for the fandom that may have seen as "dull" or "weak" at first. Or better yet: if you associate a name with someone successful, no matter how bad the name is, you'll grow to it and don't care how bad it seemed.

I dunno, we've had some fairly big-name wrestlers who've used some pretty weird names.
Nick Bockwinkel springs to mind.

Granted I was 13 at the time, but the first time I heard the nickname "Stone Cold" I thought it was one of the worst nicknames I'd ever heard. I didn't know what it meant, and I thought it was nowhere as good a name as "The Ringmaster." Again, I was 13.

Best and Worst name isn't quite the same. I am not reading through that whole thread to see if the conversation moved into this, but I am talking more "behind the name".
Like I said, Nexus looked horrid at the start but it became known by everyone. McGillicutty hasn't done that.
I dunno, I give up, lol.

Names like "The Miz" and "Edge" have gotten alot farther than one would think.

Names like "The Miz" and "Edge" have gotten alot farther than one would think. That's what this thread is meant to be about. Why does a name as random as "Edge" not affect the performer, yet McGillicutty has castrated Mr Hennig. Is it the wrestler can't work enough to get over or is it the name is just so horrid, it kills him?

I've always thought that "Triple H" must make no sense at all to non-wrestling fans. X-Pac was another one.

Is it the wrestler can't work enough to get over or is it the name is just so horrid, it kills him? One has talent and the other doesn't? Although related to that, given that most of WWE's true top guys over the years - Cena, Orton, Michaels, Hart, and Austin aside - have this cartoony, over-the-top air to them (even Hulk Hogan doesn't sound like the name of a real guy so much as a cheesy action hero) why do they keep giving these overly specific, awkward real names to people? Though then, given how they had to push the guy non-stop for five years before anyone gave a damn about him I also wonder why everyone has to be an Orton clone.

I don't think McGillicutty's problem is in the name. It's in the performer, as another poster said.
As far as "generic" names go, is there anything more generic than Shawn Michaels?
Ask Corny if he could imagine Hunter Hearst Helmsley main eventing WM.
As for Spanky, I don't think The Brian Kendrick quite made it that far, but I believe he got over huge in Japan as Spanky DiCaprio.

Ain't gonna get over at Mania with a name like that. That's why we've come up with a new gimmick for you, to make you more marketable to our fan base, and to create our own history.... ... Rodger MacSpankwell III ...

Between the names they proposed for Austin and the list of names that they proposed for Jericho's finisher, I really question where they find these idea guys. Yes, a good name is essential, otherwise you will be seen as a joke before you can show anything in the ring.

I'm in the boat that says there's nothing much in a name, it's what you do with that name. Bockwinkel is a good example, as well as Hunter Hearst Helmsley. Nothing about "Arn Anderson" or "Bob Backlund" stands out as particularly exceptional as far as names. The people behind the name, however, are certified legends. On the other hand, a name like Heidenreich or Luke Gallows sounds downright intimidating, but where did it get them?

"the miz" sounds extremelly stupid. How so? It's basically the same as The Rock. I mean, the names are pretty much exactly the same in terms of flow and origin.
