Quite a few indy guys have had success in the WWE.
Miz wrestled in the indys before he went to WWE (Wasn't he in Cena's dads promotion?), Sheamus, Drew and Barrett wrestled in the UK indy feds for years, ADR wrestled in the Mexican feds etc

I'm not even sure where this myth comes from. All the independent guys who were actually worth the hype generally rose up. Except the ones like Kaval and Cabana who were jobbed immediately and repeatedly and were given no chance to rise up, and then were fired.

It did kinda suck how Kaval was misused, but at least he still won a season of NXT. That might not mean much in the grand scheme of things, but it was still WAY more than what they did with Cabana.

On that same note thats happened to guys who weren't big indy names either. All Punk and Bryan prove is that talent can rise up the card, regardless of where they are from.

Mexican feds are a different beast altogether. They're a bit too large to be classified as 'indies' if you ask me.

Pretty much everyone on the roster could be considered as having an "indie" background, as 90% of wrestlers have previous experience before getting signed to FCW.

Mick Foley got a good deal of his notoriety in the Indies (ECW). Rob Van Dam and The Dudleys both came to WWE from the Indies and had very good careers.
