I could see the angle being something along the lines of a no-compete clause that lasts for 90 days, with the loophole being that the WWE Champion must defend the title at least once every 30 days or be held accountable for damages or something. Where Punk doesn't hold a contract but as the legal WWE Champion he still has to defend the title otherwise he'll be sued for all he's worth. However, once the 90 day clause is up, Punk is free and clear... giving McMahon 90 days to get the title off Punk.
Something like that... regardless, I do think Punk is tired and wants time off so I could see him having a contract for just a couple more months then taking a long, open-ended vacation. When he's ready to return to the ring, he always has a job waiting for him with the WWE so he can take all the time he wants/needs.

I really hope they play this up by letting him "defend" the title in the indies or in Japan before he comes back. Punk goes to TNA, is booked in a match with Kurt Angle, Angle wins and is signed by WWE. Problem solved.

A lot of people have said he's leaving... But it doesn't make any sense to have him win the title if it's true.

I am in the minority. But I say no because Man, I got a crazy theory. Punk didn't resign. So Vince is going to pretend that last night didn't happen, and create a new belt. The tournament will begin tonight with Del Rio winning.

No. Vince isn't actually THAT stupid (stupid non the less) to beat its top merch guy and draw, for the title, and let him go off and have a 'fun time' with it. Vince McMahon: Self-made millionaire who made professional wrestling a global phenomena, is stupid? I don't quite follow.

wwe.com still recognizes CM Punk as the current champion.

Does the question need to be asked? They've built Punk up as big as anybody in the last five years. They wouldn't have done that if there was a chance he wasn't staying long-term to make them a pile of money.
Not only do I believe he's under contract, I'll bet my last penny on him having already signed a long-term, vastly improved contract with the current angle being a way of giving him the time off he wanted.

Why are people comparing this to 97? Back then, there was competition. Now, there isn't. There's nowhere for Punk to go that could threaten the WWE.
I wouldn't be surprised if he really doesn't have a contract, and that there's just an open door for him to return. Honestly, I just don't really see where he can fit into this angle as it's going now. It seems like they're going down the road of Vince/HHH, or maybe HHH turns and feuds with Cena.
I think it is possible that they might WANT Punk to spend some time back in ROH to see if they can help along what they see as a new ECW.

It would be absolutely insane for them to have let Punk or anyone else actually walk out of the company with the belt without having been signed first. No chance he wasn't actually signed before they did that angle.

No chance he wasn't actually signed before they did that angle. Absolutely, no promotion in the world would put the title on a guy that isn't signed to them for the foreseeable future, even if there is no competition. I'm sure that Punk has already re-signed a long term deal and is just getting time off.

Punk is finally on the verge of being "The Guy" for the company. Something that he's dreamed all his life and worked his butt off to achieve. And they want us to believe that he's going to leave NOW??
