It would have been funny if Vince just kept sending out the entire Raw roster to challenge Punk up until he legally could have at midnight. At 11:59, he runs out of guys and sends out Gillberg, who spears Punk and wins the WWE title.

Punk should have gotten on the mic and said "oh by the way, I stole the blueprints for this title, you can't even make another one now! oh, by the way, belts have blueprints. don't ask why...they just do."

All I know is that all 7 of us that were watching tonight, marked hard during the entire match and also at how it ended. Well done WWE.

I was thinking something along the lines of HBK/Razor for the IC belt. Razor was the new champ, but Shawn had the physical belt and claimed to be the real champion since he never lost the belt. Granted the actual circumstances are different, but it's the same deal. Like the Rocky analogy.
Someone will have a new belt, but they never beat Punk for it. He has bragging rights, and no matter what Vince did he couldn't stop him. That's where the actual *physical* belt has value in all of this.

What an epic night. I have no voice. The whole arena was pro-Punk, hope that came across well on TV.

Will Vince announce a tournament (and give Alberto an advance due his #1 contendership to the finale) at SummerSlam?
Thoughts?

I honestly don't know. This is probably the last outcome I would've predicted.

Punk goes back in time and defeats all champions, starting with Hackenshmidt until he catches up to present day and defeats Del Rio at the end of said tournament.

I have no idea, which make everything even more awesome. I haven't the slightest clue where they're going with this.

Punk will be as gone from WWE television as Cena was last fall or Austin was any of the ten zillion times he was "fired".
I'll make a tentative prediction of a Cena/Punk rematch headlining Summerslam, with Cena winning the title back clean only to immediately lose the belt to del Rio.

Does this mean you're confused, yet interested?
[Sorry, had to bust that out.]

What an awesome show.
I love this angle so much.
I cannot wait to see what happens next. I have not felt this way about the WWE in years.

That would be quite the backtrack. I say let Punk bygones be gone. New champ begins, John Cena/Vince fallout unfolds, and needed feuds seek climaxes.

Unlike Cena & Austin, Punk doesn't want to be there. Why would he come back? He's got the belt and stuck it to Vince BIGTIME. He has no reason to show up again, in terms of kayfabe.

I'll make a tentative prediction of a Cena/Punk rematch headlining Summerslam, with Cena winning the title back clean only to immediately lose the belt to del Rio. I say somehow, Cena gets re-hired. Cena vs. Del Rio is made for SummerSlam for the new World champion, along with maybe the old Unified Title or Attitude Era belt. Punk comes back after brief appearances in ROH, NJPW, and *GASP!* TNA! (Maybe not TNA...). Del Rio won the title against Cena and Punk claims del Rio isn't the real champ. Punk beats him for the title to unify them, but del Rio immediately cashes in the MITB briefcase! Now Punk is the babyface chasing the title into WrestleMania, where Punk vs. Del Rio will likely not Main Event, in favor of, of course, Rock/Cena.

Just watched the PPV for a second time ...
... I'm serious.
At first, I wasn't 100% behind the "Match of the Year/Best Match I've Ever Seen" kneejerk reactions after the Cena/Punk match result. (Don't get me wrong, I knew the match was good and everything, and I was THRILLED with the outcome--I'm just talking about the match itself.) I will say this, however. That match was even better a second time around. I think my jaw was just dropped for the duration of the match the first time, and I was in mark-mode with a lot of things and possibilities running through my head. But that really was a terrific, terrific match. Just watched it again.
And yeah, as I said earlier in this thread, that Smackdown MITB was REALLLLLLY good.
