Just watched the PPV for a second time ... ... I'm serious. At first, I wasn't 100% behind the "Match of the Year/Best Match I've Ever Seen" kneejerk reactions after the Cena/Punk match result. (Don't get me wrong, I knew the match was good and everything, and I was THRILLED with the outcome--I'm just talking about the match itself.) I will say this, however. That match was even better a second time around. I think my jaw was just dropped for the duration of the match the first time, and I was in mark-mode with a lot of things and possibilities running through my head. But that really was a terrific, terrific match. Just watched it again. And yeah, as I said earlier in this thread, that Smackdown MITB was REALLLLLLY good. You're not alone. I watched the replay myself. First time I've ever sat through an ENTIRE replay viewing. Well worth it. Everything was just as good as I thought it was. Best WWE PPV in years.

The SmackDown MITB was really good last year too.
Generally, they seem a lot better at booking these sort of multi-man matches than RAW. They tell defined story, while RAW usually delivers a bunch of high spots strung together.

Yeah, I agree. One thing you notice on the replay is that Punk was booked as the superhero face, just as much, if not more, than Cena.
He got put over huge.

John Cena owns Johnny Ace on PPV. Which got Cena one of the biggest pops he has ever had in his career.

About the botches..
If you think about it, this is probably the most important match both men have had in a long while, where pride was at stake. For Punk, it was his last match and to prove his point, that he was indeed the best in the world, nothing short of a victory would have sufficed.
For Cena, it was a chance to prove to everyone that he deserved to the be the top guy, that CM Punk at his best and most motivated would not be able to overcome him.
So, the hot crowd and the occasion got to both men, who otherwise have nerves of steel, and made mistakes while trying to knock their opponent out.
Happens to the best in sports all the time. A player who double faults on match point, the striker who misses a penalty in the shootout, a driver who makes a momentary lapse and spins outs of control in the last lap, after leading the whole race.
A perfect match without botches is a reminder that this is sports entertainment. A match with some botches in it allows you to fool yourself into thinking "It's still real to me damnit!"

...just thought of something...
This is the cleanest pinfall lost Cena has had since the Batista SummerSlam match, isn't it?

What are you talking about? Punk is not under contract as of midnight. Cena is fired. If they don't have both these guys disappear off TV then they're saying to fans "ha, we totally got you guys. None of that stuff we were talking about was ever going to really happen." It's a plot point designed to get peple to tune into the PPV. They aren't spitting in the face of fans. That's nonsense.

Just got off work and caught the replay. WWE just did what they've been dying to do for ten years - they've just captured lightning in a bottle for a second time. CM Punk is now this generation's Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Also, why do people keep assuming Punk is actually leaving? There's no way WWE would put him over THAT much and book him like a frigging superhero just to say "ok, see you next year". He's staying.

Yah, the match had botches. If that's what you saw when you watched the match, though.....you missed an intense match.

BREAKING: I'm told CM Punk is headed to Charlotte, NC right now to defend the title against Red Flair. Is that Rice's brother?

Punk will be as gone from WWE television as Cena was last fall or Austin was any of the ten zillion times he was "fired". I'll make a tentative prediction of a Cena/Punk rematch headlining Summerslam, with Cena winning the title back clean only to immediately lose the belt to del Rio. I say somehow, Cena gets re-hired. Cena vs. Del Rio is made for SummerSlam for the new World champion, along with maybe the old Unified Title or Attitude Era belt. Punk comes back after brief appearances in ROH, NJPW, and *GASP!* TNA! (Maybe not TNA...). Del Rio won the title against Cena and Punk claims del Rio isn't the real champ. Punk beats him for the title to unify them, but del Rio immediately cashes in the MITB briefcase! Now Punk is the babyface chasing the title into WrestleMania, where Punk vs. Del Rio will likely not Main Event, in favor of, of course, Rock/Cena. Not TNA. ROH...yeah because I think that WWE has a deal with them similar to what they had with ECW where somebody in management is on the payroll to make up for all talent they take from them. Anyway, I HOPE they compensate ROH. They should. New Japan is a yes. Did you know that the owners of New Japan and WWE are business partners? YUKE'S, the gaming company, owns New Japan and makes WWE's games. But I don't think the big world chase will happen. If it did happen, we wouldn't see much of it if WWE doesn't air those matches because I doubt the other companies would be allowed to air and sell matches starring the WWE Champion. But talk about great DVD extras eventually: CM Punk VS Hiroshi Tanahashi....CM Punk VS Roderick Strong....not DVD sellers for the common fan but certainly is for me. About botches...sometimes they add to a match when the match is real intense. Two words: GANSO BOMB. I'm gonna show you for those unfamiliar with it. This is AJPW footage, so no video policing needed... Two of the greatest in the world botch a move. The crowd went nuts, the announcer almost died on the mic. It is very clearly a botch. For many, it is the greatest spot ever. The first DDT was a botched vertical suplex by Jake Roberts. The first powerbomb was a botch by Lou Thesz who yanked up an opponent too hard for a piledriver. The worse botches are those that happen in low intensity matches that can't be somehow explained by anything that happened in the match. Tonight, we saw good wrestling.

...just thought of something... This is the cleanest pinfall lost Cena has had since the Batista SummerSlam match, isn't it? He lost to Triple H clean the Raw before Bragging Rights 2009. Coincidentally, that match also had a "Cena leaves" stipulation, just that it was Raw only and Cena won.

As for Cena being fired.....we've already seen how they handle "Cena's Fired" angles. After the whole Nexus thing, I don't think even the casual fans expect anything less than them to come up with some excuse for Cena not only not being fired, but for him not even missing a single episode of Raw. They don't need an excuse. They have the Rock to provide the reason for Cena not getting fired.

If the two old dudes falling all over each other at -5 MPH at Mania is considered MOTY, then what in the world was this? Match of the Decade? Millennium? 1900s and beyond?
I haven't been kept on the edge of my seat for a match like this in as long as I can remember. You get invested in angles, you watch matches, you care, but there's always that one part missing. There was nothing missing here. It wasn't the best match of all time or anything, but you don't get much more perfect of an all around package than you did a few hours ago. f***ing sick match, and just like Canada made Rock/Hogan, Chicago made CM Punk a megastar.
I'll be watching this about another 15 times now. See ya.

They were both gased in 10 minutes.

I...I...I have nothing. I have nothing that I can say that will resonate with how I feel about the match. Just...AHHHHHHHHHH!
I watched Sean Waltman and El Generico put on what I thought was one of the best matches I've seen in my life. I told myself and others that "something really really special would need to happen for that match to get topped".
Tonight, John Cena and CM Punk did EXACTLY THAT.
I don't care for the flaming, but this may be the next match that gets the full boat from me. By that, I mean the *****.
