Of the five(!) Hell in a Cell matches we've had since this PPV started, the only one that actually felt like it was part of an angle big enough to deserve a HiaC match was Undertaker vs. Kane, IMO.
The problem is that there's nothing inherently more impressive about a HiaC match than a standard cage match, except that WWE/F spent many, many years using the HiaC sparingly for really big matches. They trained their fans to expect that when there's a HiaC match booked, it means s***'s going down.
And now... the PPV itself has gotten slightly better buyrates than most of the other non-major PPVs over the last couple years, which suggests the gimmick is a draw in of itself, but if they keep this up, I can see that fading in another year or two.
The funny thing about the HIAC buyrate is that it saw one of the bigest drop offs from 2009 to 2010. It fell from 283,000 buys to just 210,000 buys. The initial excitement for the first HIAC PPV seems to have worn off.
And concerning this years card, I have the same complaints as the OP. It would've been cool to see Punk/Cena and/or Orton/Christian end their feuds inside the cell, but due to the timing and idiotic booking it now seems as if we're stuck with Orton/Henry and maybe Cena/Del Rio. Both feuds won't have enough heat for a HIAC match, but then again neither did Orton/Sheamus last year.
Kane/Undertaker atleast made sense last year because not only is it 'their' matchtype, but that feud had been brewing kayfabe wise since June.
