I eventually turned on him, if no one else did. He certainly did politic. Foley was added to that Summerslam in Minneapolis because he did not want to do the job for HHH. He squashed a feud with Jarrett because he did not like him because of his father paying him peanuts in the CWA. He, HHH, UT, and maybe Kane squashed a building push for the Hardys to protect their spots. Austin didn't refuse to lose to HHH. Regardless whether Austin thought he was ready or not, the reason HHH didn't win at Summerslam was because Jesse Ventura was the ref. He didn't want to raise the hand of a heel, and since Austin was off TV for a few weeks afterwards that's how Mankind got in the match, that and probably to give Mankind something to do immediately following his return. Then Austin lost to him at No Mercy anyways, it wasn't a clean loss, but he did lose. The Jeff Jarrett and Billy Gunn stories are probably true, but not the HHH story. Fair enough. I buy that as a plausible theory. I don't know that it was really necessary to get Foley involved in the match, but I guess that does not really matter.

Well Foley said he was there so Austin didn't have to work a one-on-one match since he was actually injured. In addition to his nagging neck problem, Austin was going into that match with a torn ligament in his knee. It wasn't long after this that WWE thought he'd have to permanently retire. That's why Triple H attacked him after the match, to write him out for a little while so he could heal up a bit. It's also why most of their match at No Mercy consists of Austin beating Triple H outside the ring with various weapons.

And for visual proof of that Austin for the first time started wearing two knee braces from Summerslam 99 onwards. Before it had only been one.

Because Raw from 1998-2001 wasnt
"Austin feuds with Midcarder X for 4 weeks, gets come-from-behind victory at PPV"
Seriously, Cena has had so many cut and paste feuds it has done HUGE damage to him. 2005 was brutal, with Angle, Jericho and Christian.
