I've seen this idea floated around as a dream match/feud/interaction. Why is it more so than other pairings?
is it just the straight edge meets beer drinker thing or is there more to it than that?
and these vague predictions about Austin actually wrestling again, has there been any indication that this is possible?

The way it's going now, they'd almost make a better odd-couple team than opponents.

Austin might be the only guy left under WWE contract who wouldn't be crushed under the weight of Punk's insult proficiency. Nobody else on the roster could hope to keep up.

I wasn't too interested myself, up until I saw their Fantasy Warfare video in All Stars. I'd look that up if I were you - it'll get you pumped for a match that probably won't happen.

Austin's praised Punk quite a bit and their promo styles and characters seem to, initially, contrast well. With the whole outsider thing going on, Punk has an Austin feel to him to some extent. Austin has said in interviews that he feels much better and could wrestle a ton of matches if necessary, something like a full year's schedule if he had to.
There's also the amusing photo of them meeting when Punk was a teen that's been flitting around on-line.

Though of course, the picture would only really work if for some reason David Hart Smith referees it.

They're honest men (as Jericho might say). That's their one major similarity, and the one thing that would force them, differences aside, to respect one another. Austin, like Punk, speaks his mind and doesn't give a damn who doesn't like it. They're both straight-shooters, confident guys who know who they are in the "cartoon world of pro wrestling", which is all artifice and marketing and hype. So while they're different people, Austin could respect Punk's willingness and ability to put his money where his mouth is, and Punk would respect Austin's bluntness and straightforward attitude.
Yet, they have very different styles that would complement one another well, and they individually have enough charisma and audience-working savvy that one wouldn't be crushed under the personality of the other.
It's a nearly perfect matchup, really. I can't think of anything about it that wouldn't be awesome.

Plus, conveniently they're around the same size and both are brawlers, so neither one would look to have the advantage other than maybe Punk due to youth.

I'd really like to see a long term feud between the two, culminating in a match at Wrestlemania. I know Austin has said he can work a few more matches, but I'm still worried about the guy's neck. Really, all they would have to have is three matches. They split the first two, with Punk picking up the win in the final match at WM, in a "passing of the torch" type situation.

I dunno I liked Triple H saying Punk needed to find new material when it came to referencing his wife since people have been doing it for 10 years. Had such a smug look on his face when he said it as well.

At first I think it was the Straight Edge vs. beer drinking thing, plus the promos would be awesome. But then they did that hype video for WWE All Stars and Punk and Austin were doing the twitter feud. If Austin were to come back for a match, Punk would make the most sense to put him against. Really there's nobody else on the roster I'd rather see Austin wrestle. A match with Cena or Orton would make a lot of sense too, but Austin's already been very friendly with Cena on camera. It basically boils down to Punk and Orton being the best two opponents for him, and since I like Punk more I'd rather see them fight.
