Having first watched both of them the same day when Savage died, I have to admit... I thought Warrior / Savage was better than Savage / Steamboat.
That was still awesome, though, don't get me wrong. Anyone agree?

I disagree. But the matches are MUCH closer than people would suggest. I will say Savage/Steamboat is overrated. And I will say Savage/Warrior is underrated.

I disagree, but I agree that Savage-Warrior was a great match (One of only a couple Warrior matches I like).

They were both good matches but I think the Savage/Steamboat match is also highly overrated.

While Savage-Steamboat is better when it comes to the wrestling part, the presentation of Warrior-Savage was brilliant. Warrior's entrance featured him walking rather than running, signifying the importance of the match. Elizabeth was there. It felt dramatic from the entrances on.
Wrestling wise, it had a pretty good pace to it (especially considering Hogan-Warrior from a year earlier) and it was the first match I can remember seeing where both guys kicked out of a pinfall after the opposing finishing move. Some of the same elements from the Taker-HBK matches that people love can easily be applied to this match. Not saying this match compares to those, but it deserves more credit than it's gotten.

Savage/Steamboat is not "overrated." It's one of those matches that literally makes people fans. The fact that that's still true after almost 25 years is a testament to its quality.
Warrior/Savage is a good match, I won't deny that, but it really doesn't compare.

I'm gonna agree with Savage/Steamboat being held in much higher esteem than it really deserves.
Savage/Warrior was a good match....it doesn't get enough credit.

I'll be honest, I was barely into the Savage/Steamboat match at Wrestlemania III, in fact, they had better matches before. Savage/Warrior however I was hooked on because of the intensity and the drama sorrounding it. The only reason Savage's Wrestlemania III match gets the praise it does is because spot fests were uncommon back then, if it took place 20, or 10 years later it would be seen as good, but not spectacular.

I agree. I never really cared all that much about Savage/Steamboat (mostly because I always found Steamboat very boring, almost sleep inducing). But Warrior/Savage at WM7 is one of my all-time favorite and most-watched matches.

move for move I'd give that to Savage and Steamboat
But tremendous emotion and story telling is Savage/Warrior to the max

I understand where the OP is coming from. I think the emotions of the WMVII encounter, outweigh those of WMIII.
I have to confess I'm slightly dubious as to how anyone can judge any match without knowing, or appreciating the emotion behind the storyline. It's almost like appreciating Shakespeare second hand. You know all the clever bits are there, but you're not really being galvanised into the experience.
I think cold-cut retrospective analysis of any wrestling match or event, regardless of how magnificent it was at the time, can perhaps be considered slightly unfair. For that reason, as I recall Savage vs Warrior and the build up and the emotion, I'd say as an entertainment spectacle, for me, it works better.

I have to go for Savage vs Steamboat. It really does deserve all the praise it gets. The psychology's there, the wrestling ability's there, the story telling's there.
Savage vs Warrior is great too but for in-ring ability Warrior doesn't get close to Steamboat which edges that match for me.

If Savage/Steamboat seems overrated, it's only because it's been talked about since it happened, so we've all heard about it. It also may appear to be nothing special compared to today.... because many wrestlers ASPIRED to wrestle like it. Of course it's been emulated to death.
That said, I like both matches a lot. I can understand where it'd go either way for a fan.

I too prefer Savage/Warrior to Savage/Steamboat. Though I shudder to think that match happening today. "He kicked out of 5 consecutive Macho Elbows. Overrated match. No psychology, etc."

It's a close call, really. I'd give a very, very slight edge to Savage-Steamboat, but the emotion and drama involved in Savage-Warrior - especially as a young mark, as I was - was almost untouchable, especially in this day and age.
The WrestleMania III match pretty much made the IC title important. But by the time WrestleMania VII rolled around, Savage had already been IC champion and WWF champion - all he had left was to either win more championships or retire. He put his career on the line against the man he absolutely hated, and didn't come back until he had to defend the honor of the woman he loved.
I think the way both led to Macho Man face turns was cool, but as far as over-arcing storylines, the match with Warrior set in motion the wheels of my favorite angle of all-time: Savage vs. Roberts.
