I grew up idolising Christopher Reeve playing Superman. I was thinking about his other films and his overall career.
Should he have been a bigger star or was he a one trick pony?
If he didnt have the horse riding accident would he have done more roles in Hollywood or faded into "Where are they now" files?

He would never have been a massive star, but certainly a solid and dependable character actor.
I could easily have seen him as the lead of a CSI show, or something like that.

He was a good actor, and had a warm charisma to him. He would have certainly had more roles.

I agree. He was never typecast as Supes, but was identified with the character. But, the other roles he did were very good, from Somewhere in Time to Deathtrap to Noises Off to Remains of the Day. Very diverse actor.
He and Robin Williams were roommates at Julliard. Wrap your brain around that one.

He's good in comedy or dramedy type roles. I find him very good in Street Smart but the styles of him and a very intense Morgan Freeman, who was Oscar nominated, clash. When it's him in an office, he's better suited. Like Somewhere in Time, a very good movie. His role in Remains of the Day is small, they added him as the owner so he'd be in more since he's not that in the book.

Thought he was terrible in Remains of the Day, but otherwise great.

Haven't really seen too much of his work, so I can't really say.

Speaking from someone who adored him and think he was a good actor, the guy was pretty dumb with his career choices.
I know actors like to play a variety of roles, but he avoided action pictures and fantasy flicks following Superman on purpose and it cost him. Because especially at the times he was at his top in late 70s and early 80s, action pictures went to another level and serious dramas unless you were directed by a Scorcesee(who mostly hire their guys anyway), they were less than memorable and he couldn't have done indie flicks like known actors do now. So he was stuck doing progects like Monsignor or Street Smart and the Bostonians that had nice things in them but were not great movies.
I think what he should have done is embrace his role as action adventure hero, make a ton of money, become a top actor and then you can pick what you want. Imagine if he would have done Indiana Jones and other roles like that afterwards, it would have actually helped him get away from the Superman stigma because of the success of these other progects.

I saw the movie he did where he played a guy in a wheelchair before he got paralyzed and it seemed like a standard made for tv movie affair. Nothing too interesting.

Street Smart was a personal project, he only did Superman IV so they'd fund it.

Williams was one of the first people he saw in the hospital after his accident. Williams was doing his whole Russian doctor sthick from Nine Months, just to get Chris to laugh. Love that story.

Great to see Somewhere In Time getting some recognition. It's one of my favorite time travel films of all time, and Reeve gives one of the best performances of his career in it.

I grew up idolising him, but his other films are few and far between. Most of them are not available on DVD.
Always wanted him to be a bigger star.

Good actor, but to me, he is just inseparable from Superman, which isn't a bad thing at all. He was just that good in the role.
