Gotta say as much as I love Westerns, there are a helluva lot more misses than hits in the genre. Thats pretty much every genre though, isn't it? Not the best, but some pretty decent stuff: Big Country - Gregory Peck as the thinking mans hero. Sort of Shane-like in that he understands other people thinking you're a real man isn't what makes you one. Banditas - Selma Hayek and Penelope Cruz seek revenge. This is more fun and sexy then anything, if you like busty cowboy women then you're bound to enjoy this!

Heh, the series itself felt more Western than the movie did, for me, but I still think it could count. Western is a very broad genre. John Wayne movies and Spaghetti Westerns share a setting and... uhh, hats and guns? So you can see how so many films fall under the umbrella for it.

For me it is The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, such a great film. I would also rank The Man who Shot Liberty Valance and Bad Company in my favourites list too.

Once Upon A Time In The West. I would also have to give high points to The Searchers, which is a beautiful film. This guy (and those before him that mentioned these two) gets it. Also, Stagecoach.

Holy shit yes. Especially The Assassination of Jesse James and even more especially The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, which is the best John Wayne movie ever made. Westerns are awesome.

I liked a lot of the ones mentioned so far, but want to put in a word for El Topo and Duel in the Sun, which I both enjoyed greatly. This reminds me I need to watch The Long Riders, Forty Guns, The Quick and the Dead and probably a bunch more.

Agreed on Lonesome Dove. 8 hours of excellent film and music.
Also, Quigley Down Under for the final duel alone. It should count, even though it takes place in... Australia.

Centennial mini series is a great depiction of the American west.

There are several good ones over the years, though my favorites include They Call Me Nobody, Quigley Down Under, and Tombstone.

Tombstone, High Plains Drifter and Outlaw Josey Wales for me.
Oh! And Silverado for taking some things seriously and totally jumping the shark in spots. One of the few films I will watch on TV whenever it pops up!

The Shootist High Plains Drifter The Magnificent Seven
I haven't seen that many Westerns but those are ones that I liked.
