... appreciation thread. Christ that's a long ass title. Anyway, I always feel like this is the most under-appreciated STP album, possibly for being such a big departure from the sound of "Core" and "Purple", then they went heavier again when the group came back and released "No.4". Personally I think it was their most fun and diverse album of the 90's, anyone else dig it was much as I did?

Hated it at first because it was such a departure like you said but years later I grew to appreciate it more.

When it first came out I remember a lot of my friends hating it, but coming to appreciate it more as they got older and our of their angry angsty phase.

1996 was the last good year in the 90's for modern rock IMO. Tiny Music..., Pearl Jam - No Code (another album I hated but grew to like years later), Rage against the Machine's 2nd album, AIC unplugged, The last Soundgarden album, Anti Christ Superstar - Marylin Manson, Tool - Animea, Beck - Odelay, lots of great albums.

I liked it a lot, and still do like it.
Although, you can almost get a contact high from just listening to it due to how drugged out they all were during the recording of the album.

I'll never forget being in 6th grade and seeing the video for "Big Bang Baby" for the first time in homeroom (our teacher used to let us watch MTV in the morning). My friend Richie, who was one of the only other kids in my class who a) actually knew anything about music (we were 11!) and b) was into what was known as alternative rock at the time (we bonded over our love of Green Day) said to me "man, Scott Weiland has totally lost his mind!" It was... not what I expected at all from STP. But, to this day, it's probably my favorite STP record. And I still think "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart" is one of the greatest Mid '90s Rock singles (yes, I consider that a genre, it's wider in scope than just simply saying "Post-Grunge" and includes everything that couldn't actually be called "Alternative" because that became such an overused and played-out term and managed to lose any meaning it once had by 1994 or so).
Man, 6th grade was a great year.
