I've been a huge FF fan for about 10 years now, but I've noticed lately that they're FINALLY being recognized for their work, despite having a string of hits over the years and an amazing frontman who came from a legendary band. I'm not saying they were never popular before, they were, but lately they've been practically every where, even being cited as the "best rock band today". Don't get me wrong, I'm loving that their getting this kind of exposure and fame, since it's been long overdue, but what took so long? Is it an age thing? They have been together since 1994, not even a year after Kurt's death. Is Wasting Light the album that has cemented them into future rock royalty? Or is it the fact that rock music today has been in a bit of a rut, riding backseat to the ever powerful pop and hip-hop, that Foo Fighters is really the only marketable rock band left?
I can't be the only one who's noticed this.

I can't say I've noticed them being any bigger then they were around their 2nd and 3rd albums. But, Wasting Light is so f***ing awesome, maybe they are getting more attention? Man, I can't wait til the Canadian leg of the tour, I'm totally going to them again!!

I'd say they've been pretty famous for a while, around the time There is Nothing Left to Lose came out, but they seemed to really hit their stride with Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace, The Pretender was being played EVERYWHERE for a while. Plus, Long Road to Ruin is an awesome song! Wasting Light is an awesome album too. If you like 'em, You'll probably like the Davy Grolton band!

I wanna say that "Learn to Fly" was their breakout hit, even though they previously had "Everlong" and "My Hero", but that song was their big pop single. Then, "The Pretender" broke almost every rock radio longevity record out there, now Wasting Light is stamping their success down. In an almost dead generation, the fact that they're such a success is well-deserved and outstanding.
Hell, they were on Conan last night for crying out loud (in a very good interview)

Hell, they were on Conan last night for crying out loud (in a very good interview) That's what made me come to the realization, and prompted me to make this thread. Yeah, it was a great interview, and I was interested to hear what Dave had in mind for a "good" name for the band since he thinks the name Foo Fighters is so stupid (I personally love it), until either Conan or Taylor cut him off. I was like "Dammit, let him finish!". They've had a Storytellers special, a documentary, and a broadcasted, sold-out concert at f***ing Wembley Stadium, all within a span of a year.

I think it's really a testament to Dave musical ability that he made the entire first album by himself, I've always had a soft spot for Big Me. Shame I'll probably never see it live, apparently having Mentos thrown at you is like having pebbles chucked at you!

This is a joke thread right? I mean, I like the Foo and all, but they've been huge for over a decade now.
After Varisty Blues they hit HUGE with that "there goes my hero" song. If anything it seems like thier popularity has wained a bit since then.

If anything it seems like thier popularity has wained a bit since then. The title might be a bit misleading. They've always been popular. They broke out and become very well known with "Everlong" and "My Hero", winded down for a bit, came back with "Best of You" and, to a certain extent, "DOA", winded down for a while again, came back again and tore shit up with "The Pretender", and they've been on this crazy ride where they have practically become the poster band for today's rock music ever since. I already stated that they have always been very popular before, but Wasting Light seems to have cemented them as a band that went from a very popular band with a great collection of hits, to future legends. They've been in the background most of the time, while keeping themselves good and known, and occasionally move to the foreground when they get a hit song, but over the past several months it appears they've been in the foreground, with no signs of slowing down. I guess what I'm trying to say through my rambling is, they were BIG, but now it looks like they're even BIGGER.

My buddy and I talk about this all the time. Foo Fighters have moved to U2, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith iconic status. Green Day is the only other band of this era (post-grunge) that really even competes with them in terms of pop culture status, longevity, and general popularity. Rock music seems so segmented and popularity so shortlived its going to be hard for bands like Mumford and Sons, Kings of Leon, etc. to reach that level.
Looking at the current Billboard chart Foo Fighters have the #2 and #9 spots. Its weird to see them, RCHP, Bush, Staind, Blink 182, and Coldplay all in the Top 10 in the Rock Category in 2011.
note: RHCP has too, IMO, but they were around before grunge even, so they don't really count.

STAIND is still in the top 10? I am out of touch.

Dave even talked about how much it sucks having Mentos thrown at you, and how he regrets doing that video. Also, gotta remember to watch Conan when I get home. Always up for a FF interview

I got into them last year ironically. I've become such a F.A.N. that I tried to get them to perform in my garage earlier this year when they had that contest.

STAIND is still in the top 10? I am out of touch. Yeah, I had no idea Staind were even still going. The Green Day comparison is accurate. Foo Fighters, like Green Day, took them a while to reach that status of "bands of the generation", despite having big hits early in their career, making most believe they'd reach that level sooner like bands such as Nirvana, Guns N' Roses, and, in a way, Queen (it took them roughly 4 years to become mega stars, before their more well know radio hits later cemented them as legends). That's what I always expected out of FF; early success, especially with a mind-blowingly talented lead singer/song-writer/drummer/*insert any musical instrument here* in Dave Grohl.

The Foo Fighters has simply gone from being a popular solid rock group to a deserving legend status. They have been very popular since their first album, and we have always known that Dave Grould could write hits. However they have been one of few mainstream bands that continues to evolve musically and creatively over such a long period of time. It seems alot of successful rock bands top out during their 4 or 5 album, if not sooner, and then just go on autopilot.

Yeah, I would agree with longevity as the main answer.
Also, Rock music seems to be an all-time low mainstream-wise, but Foo Fighters seem to be like the only ones not affected by it. They're like the ONLY rock band at shows like the MTV Awards among the sea of Pop & Hip-Hop acts.

It's like there wasn't much and the media went "Let's push the hell out of the Foo Fighters, they've got the hits and the experience". Kind of as your token rock band so the current music industry isn't solely Pop and Hip-Hop. I mean I'm very happy for them and everything, but it's a bit sad if THAT'S the reason.

In the UK they've been playing huge venues for about 10 years.
I'm still jealous of a mate who saw them supported by Quens of the Stone Age in Manchester. Lucky so and so...

Yeah, they've had main event status in the UK for at least 9 or 10 years now, since the time "All My Life" came out.
