Foo Fighters is a good band with what's almost a monopoly on the rock scene. Among the decent rock bands left, a few aren't even rivals, since they fall into different genres and one of his contemporaries collaborates with him and John Paul Jones to make something else entirely.
It's not like the garage rock of ten years ago with bands like Blink and Third Eye and their dozens of clones. Modern rock bands are all so disparate in flavor that they play to completely different markets, and Foo Fighters are a part of that.

I'd say it happened around the time they started playing the really big festivals around 2005/2006. "In Your Honor" and "Echoes" were both critically acclaimed records. And the tours for those records were massive.
They were already huge and "one of the best rock bands today" around by the time they released "Wasting Light"

It's funny. The Foo Fighters are supposed to be one of the biggest bands in the world, but I've never actually met anyone who was a fan of theirs.
But in all fairness I don't think I've ever met a U2 fan either.

People get afraid to say they like the guys because of people's perceptions of you. At least that's what I read from folk who hate to admit they like popular things. I'm not a Foo Fighters fan, but I'm a fan of U2. Hi, I'm Dolph Ziggler DeanSoDisco.

STAIND is still in the top 10? I am out of touch. To be fair, Staind has kinda sucked the last couple albums (after It's Been Awhile hit big, seemed like they just kept trying to replicate that with ballad after ballad after ballad as singles). But they have a new album about to release, and if the first single is any indication, they're finally getting back to their Dysfunction-era sound.

I don't know why that is but I'm always being told how much they love them. With U2 I think it might be more of a generational thing. People in their twenties either really don't like them or think they're okay whereas older people who grew up with them when they had their biggest hits still think they're awesome. A generalistation yep but that's my half-arsed conclusion.

There's lot of hidden younger U2 fans out there too, the amount of hate Bono gets from 20 - 30 year olds is insane at times though. It's like being part of a cult, even if you aren't fond as Bono as a person...

They're pretty much THE Rock band at the moment in Pop culture/music. I've noticed them mentioned a lot when it comes to advertisement for Festivals etc. I think they're being recognized and have been awarded #1 rock band status for their amazing tenure in the music business.

I think 'Why?' is a better question. This is a band who are arguably worse than some of the more stranger choices of 'big' and 'future legend' acts in last few years such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Muse yet still somehow manage to sustain a stranglehold on people despite such absolute bare faced crappery.

I think one of the reasons is that they're one of the most down to earth bands you'll ever see. I mean, there's a reason Dave got the nickname "the nicest man in rock". They don't pretend to be big rock stars. They're just being themselves. People can relate to that.

The Foo Fighters have been huge since their inception in 1995. Their first album alone got plenty of radio play with "This is a Call", "I'll Stick Around" and especially "Big Me". "Big Me" was on MTV constantly in 1996 (back when they still played music videos).
The Colour and the Shape was a Billboard top 10 album and "Everlong" was another huge video.
"Learn to Fly" was their first top 20 single and this was back in 1999. So, I think they've always been big. The reason why now they are praised so much is because they're really one of the last mainstream modern rock and roll bands left. Rock has definitely fallen from the eye of the mainstream, but the Foo Fighters have managed to maintain a successful career despite that, both critically and commercially.
As far as them currently being the faces of rock and roll or having a monopoly on the genre, I'd say that title belongs to Green Day.

I saw them a few weeks back at the ACC and they did a two-and-a-half hour set. They're an incredible arena band.

IMO, the biggest rock bands in the current age are (in no order):
1.- Foo Fighters 2.- Green Day 3.- Muse

my oldest brother is a big foo fighters fan, so i've always been around their music. i just assumed everyone liked them because its good music...
a few years ago at dinner, mom asked me and my bro what band from "our generation" could do something like a half-time show at the superbowl, and we both answered foo fighters.
they're just incredible.

Theyre the best f***ing live band in the world. Saw them in Milton Keynes this year, and they blew it up.
Anyone who is hating on them needs to go watch them hold a 65000 person crowd in the palm of their hand for 2 and a half hours.

Foo Fighters started getting big around the late 90s. They've grown in popularity with each album they've released over the last 15 years or so. And they've earned it, IMO.
