Because honestly this isn't that bad...I can dig the sampling of "Hot Rod Lincoln", it's...not great, but it's a sound that had potential. They shoulda just stayed like that. But I can't really put a pinpoint on what exactly genre it'd fall under. But it seems better than what they assaulted our ears with later on.

Hardcore punk ? Thats what it sounds like to me. If they stayed with that sound they wouldnt have made any money and clearly they had ambitions of being a big band.

and clearly they had ambitions of being a big band. That's silly! I'm kidding but I do tend to love anything with something of a rough punk sound, so that might explain a lot.

Fly was the anomaly on it. When that hit big, the follow-up cd contained more stuff similar to that.

I think "When It's Over" should've just been their last album title.

I remember I first heard this song and Speed Home California playing Road Rash 3D. GRRRRRR! I was trying to post a video of it from Youtube and noticed you beat me to it. I remember renting the PS1 from a mom-and-pop video store here in town and renting Road Rash 3D with it. I was a fan of Road Rash 1-3 on the Genesis so I thought it would rule. I popped it in, heard the sample for: ...and for the 10 minutes it took to set it up, I honestly thought it was the greatest game of all time...then the game started...

THAT'S WHAT SUGAR RAY SOUNDED LIKE?
They could have been awesome! Granted I'm only basing it on this song, but there's boatloads of potential there. They could have been huge and had a lasting impact I think.

They did make Fly without knowing it would become a hit but they changed the entire sound of the band for money. I hate using the term sell out since it's thrown out way too much, but Sugar Ray's older fans probably thought that.

Considering their later stuff, this is just bizarre. Not in a bad way, it's just I would've NEVER guessed that they were making music like this back in the day. Not bad though.

Yeah, this is pretty much my reaction. I knew about the song "Mean Machine" from at least recalling it from the rather meh Road Rash 3D, but there's such a familiarity to this kind of sound, since I'm a psychobilly and punk fan, that makes me respond to it. It really is weird that the one song seemingly dragged them away from this forever. I guess I knew about "Speed Home California" as well but had no idea it was by them as well, which just further drives home the "wtf, this is awesome" factor.

I remember I first heard this song and Speed Home California playing Road Rash 3D. That is where I heard both of those as well for the first time,To answer the original OP they were a punk band more or less and from what I know some of the members were even in a 80's band called the shrinky dinks(I kid you not)also a related story,I saw them live open for matchbox 20 and I remember screaming for them to play mean machine,I would like to think they heard me cause sure enough they did and had all the older people there who were there for matchbox 20 covering their ears and their jaws dropping.

You think that's weird? THIS is from the same album as "Mean Machine:" I'm personally happy for the switch. "Every Morning" is one of the better pop songs of the past 15 years, great melodies and incredibly subtle and complex considering what it's really about. "Someday" is an incredibly sweet and genuine song as well.

I always knew they started out with a harder edge, but I kinda prefer the later softer stuff.

But yeah I agree with you about Every Morning and Someday. Both are great songs.

... a good one. Lemonade and Brownies is an awesome album, not just because it's heavier but with the variety of styles they mess around with as well makes it a great album to listen to all the way through. Floored was cool too. Then they started to mellow (sell?) out with 14:59, i still like a lot of songs on that though. From there, they were on the road to Lameville...
