It's good but not Fallout good. It misses the most important thing. The humor NV has it on the other hand. I've never played another Fallout game (though I plan on trying 1 & 2 once I get my laptop fixed/replaced) but I thought Fallout 3 had great humor. The Button Gwinnett robot for instance. Oh and the monstrous Liberty Prime shooting lasers everywhere while saying anti-communist phrases. I think the game is hilarious at times, but it does seem to be very serious most of the time.

I love both 3 and New Vegas. (Must admit, I haven't been able to get deep enough into the classic games to form a proper opinion on them, not a fan of the controls.)
I think that New Vegas definitely benefits from the stronger focus on roleplaying and factions, but I still enjoy 3 enormously, particularly since it had far stronger DLC. Dead Money has just about killed my enthusiasm for NV. I'm almost in the Sierra Madre vault, but it's just dreary by this point. I don't want to cautiously step through narrow corridors trying to avoid soundwaves, I'd much rather go with something like The Pitt, which had the moral roleplaying decisions without sacrificing gameplay.

If you are a fan of Fallout 3, and have played and enjoyed the first two Fallout games, then you'll love New Vegas. I didn't think New Vegas would be a good game because I didn't realize it was a full-length game. I figured New Vegas would be to Fallout 3 as Fallout Tactics was to the original Fallout games. Boy, was I wrong. I finally started playing it about a month ago and was instantly hooked. The only thing I didn't like was that the level cap is only 30 (pre-DLC). I hit the cap before getting to New Vegas because I did a large amount of side quests, so my interest started to fade. I got to New Vegas and became hooked again because of the story-telling. Pre-DLC cap on FO3 was 20, so, not that bad.

I've been playing Fallout 3 for a few weeks now and although I persist with it I am struggling to really get into it. My problem is whenever I try to explore anywhere I usually get gunned down by a Super Mutant or set on fire/bitten to death by some creature and as a result I either use up all my ammo trying to fight these guys off or I'm swinging a police baton around while they quickly kill me.
There are parts of it I enjoy like the multiple quests at one time and being free to do whatever you want so I'm going to keep trying with it.

Well I find Fallout 3 to be wonderf ... DEATHCLAW!! eh, Deathclaws ain't so bad. the NV Deathclaws on the other hand I don't know what's worse: The mission where I had to clear out the quarry of them by myself, the fact it took me an hour and standing on glitched ledges they couldn't reach and saving after every DC kill, or the fact that they was more of them.....

They are both great games. I don't think New Vegas is any less filled with stuff to explore than Fallout 3 - Fallout 3 had a lot of empty space. NV condenses it a bit more I think. Also, there are definitely more missions, as well as more weapons. Fallout 3 has a MUCH, MUCH better soundtrack though.

I loved it... but it didn't have nearly as much replay value as it should have had. I'd rate the game at ****1/2 out of 5.

The real problem with Cazadores is that they're glitched in a way that makes it ridiculously difficult to target their heads in VATS unless you're right in front of them, which is a really stupid place to be. If it weren't for that one little glitch, they'd be easier to deal with.

Yea, you really need to level up before you go exploring. On the lower levels the super mutants can be a real pain, especially in the DC metro area where you seem to encounter a ton of them at once any time you try to explore. On this playthrough I focused on leveling up my small guns and medicine stat, and picked the "toughness" perk a few times as well as "gunslinger" and "finesse". So the weapons I mainly use (Assault Rifle, Combat Shotgun, and Scoped .44 Magnum) are all insanely effective. The "sniper" perk is probably a good help also, though I haven't tried it. I also got the "fortune finder" and "scrounger" perk so now I find a lot of caps and ammo in the random containers. That really seems to help. Also, knowing how to fight Super Mutants properly helps a lot. If you always go for head shots it doesn't always work out very well. I usually try to cripple their limbs so they drop their weapon, and then start blasting away at them with the shotgun while they try to recover. The ones with frag grenades can be taken out easily by shooting the grenade before they throw it at you. You can also disable their weapons by shooting it, but it makes the weapon basically worthless for you to pick up.

If it weren't for that one little glitch, they'd be easier to deal with. Vast majority of the time I travel with Boone, which might as well be cheating for how easily he takes out targets. I've found that the way to go with Cazadors is energy weapons, with a high-crit build. They seem to vaporize more often than other enemies for some reason.

When it gets right down to it, at this point, I love both games pretty much equally.
I like the "feel" of Fallout 3 better, just more of a lonely, creepy setting. You almost feel the life ripped out of the ruins in that game, whereas New Vegas, it has more of a shanty-town feeling. Granted, that's because it's the desert, but still... I got more of a feeling of people starting over in New Vegas rather than life being extinguished.
But one thing I'll give New Vegas the edge over is how it guides you in quests. When I first played Fallout 3, I got to Megaton, got a few quests that I was way too underpowered to do at the time, and just wandered around lost. Reason? I had no clue that Moira Brown existed, that stores close up shop at a certain time, and that her quests were basically the "tutorial/free xperience quests" you get from most RPGs. It took me actually going to a friend's house who was familiar with the game and to walk me through the first few quests for me to get a feel on what I was doing. New Vegas tells you where you go, who to meet, and does everything to put you on the right path right away, so I'll definitely give that game the edge when it comes to new people diving right into the game.
Overall, I have a tough time deciding which game I like more... which I honestly don't see as anything but a good thing.

I prefer New Vegas in a big way, personally. Just a much more engrossing experience from a story perspective.

One lesson I learned the hard way was to make sure you up your repair skills and make sure you repair all your weapons as much as possible. Having your weapons as close to 100% as possible helps a great deal. Also make sure your armor is repaired as well.
I liked both games but I liked Fallout 3 better. The DLC for New Vegas was pretty terrible (but the last one looks pretty interesting).
The only thing is, New Vegas has to be the must buggy game I have ever played.
