...Switch to bodysuits in the first place? He still had his physique well throughout his career, and people with worse physiques have wrestled in well less. He wound up doing mostly long tights during his run in WCW. So why did he spend so much of his arguable prime in the WWF covering up his torso with the Electric Cowboy suits?
I admit I like the overall Electric Cowboy look in terms of his entrance and promotional wear since it's what I remember as a kid, but looking back on his ringwear during this period it's just rather... jarring, especially towards the end of his WWF run with things such as a solid neon pink bodysuit that'd put the Harts to shame. With a few exceptions I don't even really remember it being used as something to strip off to pop the ladies in the crowd a la the Hardys' shirts.
They were just kinda there. I still dunno why he didn't just go with long tights if he didn't want to wear trunks anymore. That's what he wound up going back to for the most part anyway...
That's still kind of a jarring transition, going from the sparkly robes and three-star trunks to the Neon Cowboy... I'm sure we could put a date to that transition, but yeah.

I think he just liked electric cowboy suits. He was a weird dude.

Maybe because it helped him stand out? There were tons of guys in trunks and singlets. But no one stood out like Randy Savage. And if you look at the colourful personalities of guys in the roster back then, that is saying something.

Meltzer mentioned in Savage's obit that he switched to the bodysuits because he was paranoid about being singled out during the federal steroid investigation.

The investigations started as early as late 1989/early 1990? Because he was still wearing trunks at Survivor Series 1989 but was starting to wear the other style outfits by Royal Rumble 1990.

The investigations started with Dr Zahorian around that time. The McMahon trial was a trickle-down effect.

He will always be remembered for having the best wrestling attire ever in my opinion

It may have been a body image thing. Getting off roids made him smaller. To the world he was still huge, but to Macho maybe he wasn't as big as he once was, so he wanted to cover up

Yeah, he started wearing those to cover up as he slowly cycled off. Looked cool, no matter the reason.

Weird that he wore the cowboy hats instead of the crown while he was still Macho King. He had great attires no matter how extravagant or low key. Even the tights with three stars looked awesome.

I'll never forget the first time he ever wore the long tights. He came running down the aisle at Royal Rumble 1990 and immediatly started beating up Jake The Snake with his scepter. The first thought in my head was "He's got floral print, shiny turquoise tights and orange wrist tape. That's new". That's how out of left field the new look was.

I feel the change was imperative in getting the Macho Man/King character over in the 90's. For some reason many wrestlers get left behind during a decade change. Brutus Beefcake and Demolition didn't transition well into the 90's and guys like X-Pac, Billy Gunn and the Roadog didn't transition well into 2000.

I didn't mind the long tights and shirt combo as such, but I did think the colours were terrible. Made him look like a lost member of The Village People. It looked as if someone had thrown a bomb into the tailor's and the colour scheme that came out was the result.

The popular theory over the years was because he was concerned about his physique, but it may have simply been that he wanted to change-up his look or a combination of both.
